With Ichigo Kurosaki trapped in Hueco Mundo, Soul Society comes under attack by a mysterious group of warriors calling themselves the Wandenreich. The Soul Reaper captains valiantly stand against the invaders, but they face a battle they may not be able to win.

As the Sternritter exploit their stolen Bankai and overwhelming abilities, Soul Society suffers devastating losses. Its defenders must endure the Quincy assault while Ichigo struggles to escape his prison and reach Seireitei.

Trapped within Quilge Opie’s spiritual prison, Ichigo desperately tries to escape while hearing reports of Soul Society’s mounting casualties. In Seireitei, Äs Nödt uses The Fear and the stolen Senbonzakura Kageyoshi to overwhelm Byakuya Kuchiki, leaving the captain critically injured. Kenpachi Zaraki defeats three Sternritter before challenging the figure believed to be Yhwach, but he is swiftly subdued.

After Driscoll Berci reveals that he killed Chōjirō Sasakibe and stole his Bankai, Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto destroys him in fury. The captain-commander then confronts the apparent Wandenreich emperor and releases Zanka no Tachi, revealing a Bankai whose immense heat threatens Soul Society itself.

Yamamoto demonstrates the four forms of Zanka no Tachi, using its concentrated flames, defensive heat, and the reanimated remains of past victims to dominate his opponent. He ultimately destroys the supposed Yhwach, only to learn that the enemy before him is Royd Lloyd, a Sternritter capable of reproducing another person’s memories and personality.
