When a mysterious group of warriors calling themselves the Wandenreich attacks, Ichigo Kurosaki heads to Hueco Mundo to help his friend Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck. There, he confronts a powerful Quincy officer whose abilities demonstrate the strength of Soul Society’s new enemy.

When the Wandenreich takes the fight directly to Soul Society, an all-out war between Soul Reapers and Quincies begins. The captains soon discover that the invaders possess a weapon capable of turning their greatest strength against them, leaving Ichigo as one of Soul Society’s last hopes.

In Hueco Mundo, Ichigo battles Quilge Opie, whose Quincy: Vollständig and Sklaverei techniques allow him to absorb surrounding spiritual matter. After the Tres Bestias summon Ayon, Quilge absorbs the creature and gains even greater strength. Ichigo ultimately overwhelms him with Bankai, enabling Kisuke Urahara to prepare the group’s return to the World of the Living.

Meanwhile, the Wandenreich launches its invasion of Seireitei. Bazz-B devastates the Third Division, critically wounding Izuru Kira, while the Sternritter spread across Soul Society and confront the captains. Faced with unfamiliar opponents, Byakuya Kuchiki, Tōshirō Hitsugaya, Sajin Komamura, and Suì-Fēng release their Bankai to test the enemy’s apparent sealing ability.

The captains discover too late that the Quincy medallions do not merely seal Bankai but steal them outright. Soul Society urgently calls Ichigo for assistance, and he departs Hueco Mundo through the Garganta. Quilge survives long enough to activate The Jail, trapping Ichigo between worlds and forcing him to hear the invasion’s casualties without being able to intervene.
