After the Soul Reapers’ defeat by the mysterious warriors known as the Wandenreich, Ichigo Kurosaki travels to the Soul King Palace to heal his wounds. Once restored, he and Renji Abarai must undergo intense training to become strong enough for the coming war.

Meanwhile, two of Soul Society’s most feared warriors enter a deadly battle designed to awaken power that has remained suppressed for years. Ichigo’s own training soon forces him to confront the origins of his abilities and the hidden history of his family.

After recovering in Tenjirō Kirinji’s healing springs, Ichigo and Renji replenish their spiritual energy through Kirio Hikifune’s food. They then meet Ōetsu Nimaiya, creator of the Zanpakutō, who challenges them to earn the acceptance of the Asauchi. Renji succeeds, but Ichigo fails because he never received a true Asauchi and is sent back to the World of the Living to discover his origins.

Beneath Seireitei, Retsu Unohana reveals herself as the first Kenpachi and repeatedly pushes Kenpachi Zaraki to the brink of death, restoring the strength he unconsciously suppressed after their childhood encounter. Zaraki ultimately surpasses and kills her, inheriting the Kenpachi title in full and hearing the voice of his Zanpakutō for the first time.

Unable to face his father, Ichigo seeks refuge with Ikumi Unagiya, but Isshin Kurosaki retrieves him and begins explaining his past as Captain Isshin Shiba. His account introduces the younger Masaki Kurosaki, a Quincy living with the Ishida family, and the artificial Hollow White, whose appearance begins the chain of events behind Ichigo’s birth.
