The peace is suddenly broken when warning sirens sound throughout Soul Society. Residents of the Rukongai are disappearing without a trace, and no one knows who is responsible. At the same time, a dark presence begins extending its reach toward Ichigo Kurosaki and his friends in Karakura Town.

When masked intruders declare war on the Soul Reapers, Ichigo is drawn into a conflict involving an enemy long thought to have vanished. The attacks mark the beginning of a new war capable of threatening Soul Society, Hueco Mundo, and the balance connecting the worlds.

As Hollows begin disappearing throughout the World of the Living, newly assigned Soul Reapers Ryūnosuke Yuki and Shino Madarame are overwhelmed during their first patrol in Karakura Town. Ichigo and his friends rescue them, but their arrival is followed by an attack from Asguiaro Ebern, an Arrancar carrying a Quincy cross who attempts to seal Ichigo’s Bankai.

In Soul Society, Lüdaas Friegen delivers a declaration of war from the Wandenreich, whose ruler, Yhwach, announces that Soul Society will be destroyed within five days. Investigations reveal that the enemy is composed of Quincies and is responsible for both the missing Rukongai residents and the destruction of Hollows.

After Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck reports that Hueco Mundo has been conquered, Ichigo, Orihime Inoue, and Yasutora Sado travel there with Kisuke Urahara. They encounter the Wandenreich’s hunting force under Quilge Opie, who is selecting Arrancars for service and executing those who resist. As Ichigo confronts Quilge, Yhwach orders the Sternritter to begin their invasion of Soul Society.
