Kenpachi Zaraki

Zaraki lives for battles that test his limits. He is fearless, impatient with elaborate strategy and frequently allows strong enemies opportunities to recover or reveal their best techniques. Weak opponents bore him, while anyone capable of injuring him can earn his respect regardless of allegiance.

His recklessness is partly deliberate. The eyepatch, hair bells and habit of fighting one-handed all prolong combat, compensating for strength that otherwise ends many encounters too quickly. Although outwardly savage, he can be perceptive about fear and fighting spirit, and he does not automatically kill opponents once they cease to interest him.

Zaraki is also fiercely loyal to his division in an unconventional way. He expects subordinates to pursue strength for themselves, yet his presence gives the Eleventh Division a strong identity and inspires intense devotion among its officers.

Zaraki possesses immense spiritual pressure, physical strength, endurance and instinctive swordsmanship. He can continue fighting after wounds that would incapacitate most Soul Reapers, and the force of his spiritual energy can overwhelm weaker beings before he attacks. His eyepatch, engineered by the Twelfth Division, constantly consumes that energy.

Although largely self-taught, Zaraki briefly received formal sword instruction from Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto. His two-handed strike, Ryōdan, demonstrates how much stronger he becomes when he abandons his usual self-imposed handicaps.

Nozarashi's Shikai is released with the command “Drink.” It becomes a massive cleaver capable of cutting through extraordinarily durable targets and even destroying a meteor. His unnamed Bankai transforms him into a red-skinned, berserk combatant whose strength rises beyond what his own body can safely withstand.

Zaraki first confronts Ichigo Kurosaki during the Soul Society rescue mission. Their battle pushes both men beyond their assumed limits and ends without a decisive victor, establishing a rivalry founded on mutual excitement rather than hostility. Zaraki later helps Ichigo's allies and becomes one of Soul Society's most dependable front-line combatants.

In Hueco Mundo, he defeats Nnoitra Gilga after abandoning his one-handed style, then participates in the battle against Yammy Llargo. During the Quincy invasion, the scale of the threat forces Soul Society to unlock strength that Zaraki had unconsciously suppressed since childhood.

Training against Retsu Unohana reveals their shared history: she was the first opponent who made the young Zaraki experience genuine fear and exhilaration. Their repeated death matches restore his sealed potential, and Zaraki ultimately kills Unohana before finally hearing Nozarashi's voice. He subsequently battles enemies including Gremmy Thoumeaux and Gerard Valkyrie.

Yachiru Kusajishi is Zaraki's adopted daughter and longtime lieutenant. He named her after the only warrior he had admired, and she remained his closest companion from childhood; her existence is ultimately connected to the manifested power of Nozarashi.

Retsu Unohana is Zaraki's formative rival and the first holder of the Kenpachi title. Their childhood encounter caused him to restrain his own strength, while their final training duel restored it.

Ichigo Kurosaki is a respected rival whose ability to survive and wound Zaraki rekindles the captain's excitement in battle. Zaraki repeatedly seeks another opportunity to fight him.

Ikkaku Madarame and Yumichika Ayasegawa are devoted Eleventh Division officers who followed Zaraki before joining the Gotei 13. They regard service under him as more important than conventional advancement.
