Isshin Kurosaki

Isshin is exuberant, theatrical and determined to involve himself in his children’s lives. He wakes Ichigo with physical attacks, conducts absurd family meetings and speaks to Masaki’s memorial poster as though she were present. Beneath the comedy, he maintains a functioning clinic and responds competently to medical emergencies.

He gives his children room to make their own decisions. Isshin recognizes Kon’s occupation of Ichigo’s body but does not interfere, explaining that he has never addressed Kon as Ichigo. He similarly waits for Ichigo to ask about the family’s history rather than forcing the truth upon him before he is prepared.

Isshin’s grief is private and ritualized. On the anniversary of Masaki’s death, he smokes at her grave because she once told him that smoking made him look attractive—the first and last compliment she gave his appearance.

Isshin possesses captain-class spiritual pressure, exceptional physical strength and expert command of swordsmanship and Shunpo. He can launch a large opponent with a finger flick and withstand direct exchanges with Aizen.

His Zanpakuto, Engetsu, is released with “Burn.” Its Shikai has a broad, curved blade with a tassel at the hilt and can channel fire through Isshin’s blood. Isshin uses Getsuga Tensho, projecting concentrated spiritual energy in an arcing blast much like Ichigo.

Isshin has achieved Bankai, though its name and appearance remain unrevealed. Aizen notes that the Bankai places enough strain on Isshin’s body that he cannot activate it while seriously injured.

For roughly twenty years, Isshin’s Shinigami power is committed to a special Gigai that suppresses the Hollow White within Masaki. His abilities gradually return only after that restraint is no longer required.

Isshin initially appears to be an ordinary widowed doctor unaware of Ichigo’s Shinigami activities. He later reveals his restored Shinigami powers by confronting and killing Grand Fisher, the Hollow associated with Masaki’s death.

He joins Kisuke Urahara and Yoruichi Shihoin in battling Aizen, combining direct attacks with techniques intended to create an opening for Ichigo. Isshin also teaches his son how to seek the Final Getsuga Tensho from Zangetsu.

The “Everything but the Rain” history identifies him as Isshin Shiba, former captain of the Tenth Division and head of a Shiba branch family. After meeting Masaki during an investigation into the artificial Hollow White, he abandons his position and spiritual powers to save her life. He subsequently becomes a physician, marries her and adopts the Kurosaki surname.

Masaki Kurosaki — Isshin’s late wife. He sacrifices his position and spiritual powers to stabilize her soul, then builds his human life around their family.

Ichigo Kurosaki — Isshin’s son, whom he trains through comic attacks and later guides through the truth about his ancestry.

Karin Kurosaki — His younger daughter, whose practical temperament makes her the family member most likely to answer his foolishness with a kick.

Yuzu Kurosaki — His younger daughter and the child most receptive to his overt affection.

Kisuke Urahara — The exile whose specially constructed Gigai makes it possible for Isshin to save Masaki.

Ryuken Ishida — Masaki’s former intended husband and Isshin’s uneasy ally in protecting her from Hollowfication.

Rangiku Matsumoto — Isshin’s former lieutenant, who regularly managed the work he neglected as captain.

Toushirou Hitsugaya — Isshin’s former Third Seat and the officer he recognized as a future captain.
