Toushirou Hitsugaya

Hitsugaya is serious, observant and easily irritated when others treat him as a child. He dislikes being called by casual nicknames, particularly Momo’s “Shiro-chan,” and repeatedly corrects anyone who omits his captain’s title.

His discipline developed partly in response to the unruly people around him. He manages paperwork efficiently, plans operations carefully and notices inconsistencies that more senior officers overlook. Even so, his composure can collapse when Momo is threatened or manipulated.

Hitsugaya’s sternness coexists with quiet consideration. He assumes responsibility for protecting subordinates, trains specifically to compensate for lost abilities and avoids using weather-altering techniques at full strength when allies might be caught within their range.

Hitsugaya is a master swordsman and Shunpo practitioner with strong Kido proficiency. His spiritual pressure is naturally cold and was powerful enough to affect his grandmother before he became a Shinigami.

Hyorinmaru’s Shikai creates a dragon of ice and grants control over water, ice and atmospheric moisture. Its abilities include freezing targets at range, creating defensive walls and manipulating the weather through Tenso Jurin.

Daiguren Hyorinmaru forms ice wings, a tail, protective claws and three four-petaled ice flowers behind Hitsugaya. It dramatically expands the amount of ice he can control and supports techniques such as Ryusenka, Sennen Hyoro, Guncho Tsurara and Hyoten Hyakkaso.

When the final ice petal disappears, the Bankai reaches full maturity rather than ending. Hitsugaya temporarily assumes an adult body capable of containing its completed power. Anything frozen solid in this state has its functions suspended, and Shikai Hyoketsu freezes all matter before him after four seconds.

Hitsugaya becomes suspicious of Gin Ichimaru during the events surrounding Rukia’s execution and tries to protect Momo from the conspiracy within the Gotei 13. He discovers the Central 46 massacre but is deceived into attacking Aizen, who manipulates Momo and defeats both of them.

He later commands the advance force sent to Karakura Town, defeats Shawlong Koufang and battles Tier Harribel during the conflict with the Espada. His ice provides large-scale battlefield control, though his emotional reaction to Aizen again leaves him vulnerable to deception.

During the Thousand-Year Blood War, Cang Du steals Daiguren Hyorinmaru and Bazz-B overwhelms Hitsugaya’s improvised ice techniques. He recovers his Bankai through Urahara’s Hollowfication pills. After being turned into a zombie by Giselle Gewelle and restored by Mayuri Kurotsuchi, Hitsugaya joins Byakuya and Kenpachi against Gerard Valkyrie, where his completed Bankai is revealed.

Momo Hinamori — Hitsugaya’s childhood friend from Junrinan. He is intensely protective of her despite their frequent arguments and her continued use of his childhood nickname.

Rangiku Matsumoto — His lieutenant, whose relaxed habits contrast with his discipline but whose experience and loyalty he trusts.

Isshin Kurosaki — Hitsugaya’s former captain, who recognized his talent and informally treated him as the division’s likely future leader.

Sosuke Aizen — The traitor who manipulates Hitsugaya’s concern for Momo and repeatedly provokes him into abandoning caution.

Gin Ichimaru — The captain Hitsugaya initially suspects of orchestrating the conspiracy surrounding Rukia’s execution.

Cang Du — The Sternritter who steals Hitsugaya’s Bankai during the first Wandenreich invasion.

Bazz-B — A fire-wielding Sternritter who counters Hitsugaya’s improvised ice during the second invasion.
