Inside this volume
Ichigo Kurosaki has grown accustomed to his role as a Substitute Soul Reaper, but a challenge from a mysterious classmate introduces him to an entirely different group of spiritually aware humans. Uryuu Ishida, the last surviving Quincy in Karakura Town, despises Soul Reapers and seeks to prove the superiority of his own powers by provoking a dangerous contest.
As Ichigo and Uryū's rivalry escalates, their actions attract an overwhelming number of Hollows to Karakura Town. Forced to work together against a common threat, the two begin to understand one another while long-standing tensions between Soul Reapers and Quincy are brought to light.
Quick Facts
Ichigo encounters Uryū Ishida, a quiet student who reveals himself to be a Quincy, a human capable of destroying Hollows using spiritual weapons. Harboring resentment toward Soul Reapers for the destruction of the Quincy clan, Uryū challenges Ichigo to a competition to determine who can defeat the most Hollows in a single day. Using a Hollow-baiting device, Uryū inadvertently attracts far more Hollows than either of them anticipated.
The influx of Hollows overwhelms Karakura Town, forcing Ichigo and Uryū to abandon their rivalry and cooperate. As they battle together, Uryū demonstrates the precision and versatility of Quincy techniques while Ichigo relies on his growing instincts as a Substitute Soul Reaper. During the conflict, the two rescue innocent civilians and begin earning each other's respect.
The crisis culminates in the appearance of a Menos Grande, a massive class of Hollow unlike anything Ichigo has previously encountered. Although badly outmatched, Ichigo confronts the creature directly, displaying remarkable spiritual power that surprises both Uryū and Rukia. The Menos ultimately retreats, ending the immediate threat to Karakura Town.
By the end of the volume, Ichigo and Uryū have set aside much of their hostility. While they remain rivals, the events establish the Quincy as a distinct force within the series and foreshadow deeper aspects of the world's spiritual history.
