Inside this volume
Ichigo Kurosaki has only just begun to understand the wider spiritual world when a television exorcist's publicity stunt throws Karakura Town into chaos. At the same time, his friends begin awakening to extraordinary abilities of their own, revealing that Ichigo's growing spiritual influence is changing those around him.
As Hollows become increasingly powerful, Ichigo must protect both the living and wandering souls while learning that strength alone is not always enough. The volume expands the roles of several supporting characters and marks the first signs that Ichigo is no longer fighting these battles alone.
Quick Facts
Ichigo's attention is drawn to the popular spiritual television personality Don Kanonji, whose televised "exorcisms" unintentionally disturb wandering spirits. During a live broadcast, Kanonji transforms an Earthbound spirit into a Hollow, forcing Ichigo to intervene. Although the incident begins as comic relief, it demonstrates the dangers of meddling with souls without understanding the balance maintained by Soul Reapers.
Meanwhile, Chad becomes the focus of the story after a young girl named Yūichi's friend asks for help protecting a rare parakeet. During the ensuing conflict with a powerful Hollow, Chad awakens a mysterious supernatural ability within his right arm. His newfound power enables him to fight alongside Ichigo despite not being a Soul Reaper, suggesting that spiritually aware humans can possess unique powers of their own.
At the same time, Orihime Inoue becomes involved in a separate incident after her classmate Tatsuki Arisawa is attacked by a Hollow. Driven by her desire to protect her friends, Orihime manifests an unusual spiritual ability unlike either Soul Reaper or Quincy powers. Although her abilities are only beginning to emerge, they mark another major shift in Ichigo's circle of allies.
By the end of the volume, Ichigo realizes that his influence has awakened latent powers in those closest to him. Chad and Orihime are no longer ordinary bystanders, and the group begins taking its first steps toward fighting supernatural threats together.
