After healing Ichigo Kurosaki’s terrible wounds so that he can face Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez at full strength, Orihime Inoue must watch from the sidelines as the two battle. Although she tries to convince herself that Ichigo will be all right, Grimmjow’s taunts and Ichigo’s Hollow transformation cause her confidence to waver.

As the duel grows increasingly violent, Orihime is forced to consider whether their experiences in the realm of the Hollows have changed Ichigo—and herself—too much. The battle becomes a confrontation not only of strength, but also of the instincts and fears driving both combatants.

After Orihime finishes healing Ichigo, his long-awaited rematch with Grimmjow begins. Ichigo initially struggles against the Espada’s speed and aggression, but activating his Hollow mask allows him to fight on equal terms. Grimmjow responds by releasing Pantera, transforming into a more bestial form and intensifying the battle while Nel Tu and Orihime watch nearby.

Orihime becomes frightened by Ichigo’s masked appearance, causing him to falter while protecting her and Nel from Grimmjow’s attacks. Nel reminds Orihime that Ichigo came to Hueco Mundo because she asked him not to be hurt, prompting her to overcome her fear and encourage him. Renewed by her support, Ichigo wounds Grimmjow and withstands his strongest technique, Desgarrón, before defeating him.

Grimmjow attempts to continue fighting despite his injuries, but Nnoitra Gilga suddenly intervenes and strikes him down. The volume concludes with a side story depicting Tōshirō Hitsugaya’s childhood in the Rukongai, his developing spiritual power, and the circumstances that led Rangiku Matsumoto to encourage him to become a Soul Reaper.
