The Arrancars—Hollows that have attained Soul Reaper-like powers—descend on Karakura Town. Led by Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez, they intend to eliminate anyone who might threaten them, and their hunt extends beyond Ichigo Kurosaki and the Soul Reapers to anyone possessing even a trace of spiritual power.

As the invaders separate to search the town, Ichigo and the Soul Reaper advance team are drawn into simultaneous battles against enemies capable of releasing zanpakutō of their own. The attack forces several defenders to reveal powers they had previously concealed.

After Ulquiorra Cifer reports on Ichigo to Sōsuke Aizen, Grimmjow rejects his decision to leave the Substitute Soul Reaper alive. Defying Aizen’s orders, Grimmjow takes five Arrancar followers to Karakura Town and commands them to kill everyone with significant spiritual pressure. The invasion separates the Soul Reaper advance team, forcing its members into battles across the town.

Rukia Kuchiki, whose Soul Reaper powers have returned, confronts Di Roy Rinker and reveals Sode no Shirayuki. After defeating him, she and Ichigo are attacked by Grimmjow, whose strength quickly overwhelms them. Elsewhere, Tōshirō Hitsugaya faces Shawlong Koufang, Renji Abarai battles Yylfordt Granz, and Rangiku Matsumoto confronts Nakeem Grindina.

Ikkaku Madarame fights Edrad Liones while protecting Keigo Asano. When Edrad releases Volcánica and gains overwhelming destructive power, Ikkaku unveils the Bankai he has kept secret from most of the Soul Society. Their battle ends with Ikkaku defeating Edrad through the full power of Ryūmon Hōzukimaru.
