After defeating Ikkaku Madarame of the Eleventh Company, Ichigo Kurosaki receives a valuable piece of information: the location where Rukia Kuchiki is being held while awaiting execution. Ichigo’s companion Ganju Shiba, however, is having considerably more difficulty with his own Soul Reaper opponent.

Elsewhere in the Seireitei, Orihime Inoue and Uryuu Ishida confront the younger brother of the enormous gatekeeper whom Ichigo previously defeated. The encounter gives Uryū an opportunity to test the results of his training and demonstrate how much stronger he has become.

Following his victory over Ikkaku, Ichigo learns that Rukia is imprisoned in the Senzaikyū and resumes his advance through the Seireitei. Ganju defeats Yumichika Ayasegawa, while Orihime and Uryū encounter Jirōbō Ikkanzaka. When Jirōbō targets Orihime after being outmatched, Uryū destroys the Soul Reaper’s ability to wield spiritual power.

Ichigo and Ganju are discovered by Hanatarō Yamada, a timid member of the Fourth Company familiar with the underground passageways beneath the Seireitei. Rather than exposing them, Hanatarō reveals that he helped care for Rukia during her imprisonment and offers to guide them to her cell. Ichigo is soon intercepted by Renji Abarai, who has resolved to stop him personally.

Renji releases Zabimaru and initially overwhelms Ichigo, but Ichigo recognizes the rhythm and limitations of its attacks. Drawing upon the resolve developed during his training, he defeats Renji. As he falls, Renji remembers his childhood with Rukia in the impoverished Inuzuri district and the distance that developed between them after she entered the Kuchiki family. Unable to save her himself, he entrusts her rescue to Ichigo.
