Talk about impossible! Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates must find a way to sail to an island in the sky, and the only person who can show them the way is known as an even greater liar than Usopp. Reaching their destination will not be easy, and the crew must decide whether they can trust their lives to someone whom nobody believes.

After arriving at the home of Mont Blanc Cricket, the Straw Hats learn the story of his ancestor, Mont Blanc Noland. According to a famous picture book, Noland claimed to have discovered a city of gold on Jaya but was executed when he could not prove that it existed. Cricket has spent years diving around the island in search of evidence that his disgraced ancestor told the truth. Although he cannot confirm that Skypiea exists, Noland's logbook convinces the Straw Hats that an island in the sky may be reachable through the Knock Up Stream, a powerful upward current that occurs south of Jaya.

Cricket, Masira, and Shoujou agree to prepare the Going Merry for the dangerous ascent. Because ordinary navigation is unreliable around Jaya, the Straw Hats enter the forest to capture a South Bird, whose head always points south. While they are away, Bellamy attacks Cricket and the Saruyama Alliance, steals their recovered gold, and destroys much of their property. Enraged by Bellamy's attempt to ridicule and crush Cricket's dream, Luffy returns to Mock Town to recover the treasure.

Bellamy dismisses reports that Luffy's bounty has risen to 100,000,000 berries and attacks him with the powers of the Spring-Spring Fruit. Luffy defeats Bellamy with a single punch and retrieves Cricket's gold without taking the rest of the Bellamy Pirates' treasure. Elsewhere, developments surrounding the vacant position among the Seven Warlords of the Sea bring together senior figures from the World Government, the Marines, and several major pirate crews. Laffitte infiltrates a government meeting to nominate his captain, Teach Marshall, for the position, while Shanks attempts to contact Edward Newgate.

With only a short time remaining before the Knock Up Stream appears, the Saruyama Alliance finishes reinforcing the Going Merry and attaches wings intended to stabilize it during the ascent. Cricket guides the Straw Hats to the stream, where a giant whirlpool forms beneath their ship. The Knock Up Stream erupts before the vessel can be swallowed, launching the Going Merry and its crew into the sky as they begin their journey toward Skypiea.
