Newgate is proud, fearless and fiercely paternal. He calls his crew members his sons regardless of their backgrounds and regards any attack upon them as an assault on the entire family. His command is authoritarian in appearance but rests on affection and voluntary loyalty.

He has little interest in conventional treasure. Money matters chiefly because it can be sent to Sphinx, the impoverished island where he was born. His true aspiration is simply to have a family, a desire that distinguishes him from rivals seeking wealth, dominion or the One Piece.

Age and illness do not soften his pride. He rejects warnings that imply weakness, removes medical support before battle and refuses to retreat from Marineford himself. At the same time, he readily forgives frightened or manipulated subordinates, accepting responsibility for the consequences of calling them his sons.

The Paramecia-type Gura Gura no Mi allows Newgate to create vibrations through air, land and sea. He can produce localized shock waves, tilt the ocean, trigger tsunamis and concentrate quake force around his fists or bisento. The fruit is described as capable of destroying the world because its effects can destabilize entire regions.

Newgate is a master of all three forms of Haki. In his prime, he clashes evenly with Roger using advanced Supreme King Haki, their weapons meeting without physical contact. He also possesses exceptional Armament and Observation Haki, though illness impairs his reactions during the Summit War.

His physical endurance is extraordinary. Even while elderly, seriously ill and repeatedly wounded, he continues fighting after sustaining gunshots, cannon fire, sword wounds and magma attacks. He wields Murakumogiri, one of the Supreme Grade Blades.

Newgate was once a member of the Rocks Pirates alongside Charlotte Linlin, Kaido and Shiki. After that crew’s collapse, he formed the Whitebeard Pirates and eventually became one of the Four Emperors.

He meets Kozuki Oden in Wano and initially resists taking him aboard, then accepts him as a brother rather than a son. Years later, Newgate’s crew fights Roger’s crew for three days before the two sides exchange gifts and celebrate together.

The capture of Portgas D. Ace leads Newgate and his allied captains to invade Marineford. The rescue initially succeeds, but Ace is killed protecting Luffy. Newgate orders his remaining forces to escape and stays behind to cover their retreat.

Marshall D. Teach and the Blackbeard Pirates kill the already grievously wounded Newgate. He dies standing, without a single wound of retreat on his back, after declaring that the One Piece exists. Teach subsequently acquires the Gura Gura no Mi by an unexplained method.

Ace becomes Newgate’s second-division commander after repeatedly attempting to assassinate him. Newgate understands Ace’s parentage and gives him a family independent of Roger’s legacy. His decision to attack Marineford is presented as a father retrieving his son, not as a strategic calculation.

Marco, Jozu, Vista and the other division commanders are his senior sons and battlefield officers. Newgate entrusts the crew’s future to them and orders them to protect Luffy after recognizing Ace’s commitment to his brother.

Roger is Newgate’s rival and peer. Their clashes are legendary, but their relationship includes mutual respect and private conversation. Roger offers to reveal the location of Laugh Tale; Newgate declines because becoming Pirate King is not his dream.

Shanks approaches Newgate to warn him about Teach. Newgate respects Shanks’s strength but refuses to recall Ace, believing that doing so would compromise both his authority and Ace’s resolve.

Teach spends decades under Newgate’s protection before murdering Thatch for the Yami Yami no Mi. Newgate regards this as the one unforgivable breach of his ship’s rule. Squard, by contrast, is forgiven after Sakazuki manipulates him into stabbing Newgate.
