Shanks

Shanks is relaxed, sociable, and fond of celebrations. He avoids unnecessary conflict and is willing to endure ridicule rather than escalate a dispute over pride. This restraint is a conscious choice rather than weakness.

When people under his protection are threatened, his demeanor changes sharply. Shanks considers violence against friends unforgivable and expects his crew to understand that pirate battles carry lethal consequences.

He possesses notable diplomatic judgment. Shanks approaches enemies and institutions directly when he believes a confrontation would cause needless devastation, but he is equally willing to demonstrate force when warnings fail.

Shanks is an elite user of all three forms of Haki. His Supreme King Haki can incapacitate large groups from a great distance, damage physical surroundings, and pressure even high-ranking Marines. He can project it without making direct contact.

His Observation Haki includes the ability to perceive events several seconds into the future. Shanks can also suppress an opponent’s Observation Haki, preventing them from using future sight effectively. His Armament Haki supports his swordsmanship and allows him to confront the world’s strongest fighters.

Shanks wields the saber Gryphon. Divine Departure releases a tremendously powerful Haki-infused slash, and his speed allows him to intercept threats before others can react. He has no established Devil Fruit ability and remains a formidable swimmer despite having only one arm.

Shanks begins his career as an apprentice aboard the Roger Pirates alongside Buggy. After Gol D. Roger’s execution, he forms the Red Hair Pirates and eventually becomes an Emperor.

In Foosha Village, Shanks inspires Luffy’s desire to become a pirate. He sacrifices his arm to save the child and leaves him the straw hat as a promise that it will be returned when Luffy has become a great pirate.

Shanks later asks Edward Newgate to recall Portgas D. Ace from pursuing Marshall D. Teach. He intercepts Kaidou before the Summit War and ends the fighting at Marineford by offering to oppose anyone who continues.

Near Wano, Shanks drives Admiral Ryokugyu away with Haki. He later defeats Eustass Kid and the Kid Pirates at Elbaf after foreseeing the destruction they would cause. He then declares his intention to pursue the One Piece. Later revelations identify him as Figarland Garling’s son, Figarland Shamrock’s twin brother, and a former World Noble separated from his family after God Valley.

Monkey D. Luffy views Shanks as his childhood hero and the pirate he intends to surpass. Shanks entrusts Monkey D. Luffy with Gol D. Roger’s straw hat and follows his growing reputation with pride.

Benn Beckman, Lucky Roux, and Yasopp are Shanks’s senior officers and closest crewmates. Shanks places exceptional trust in the Red Hair Pirates as a whole.

Gol D. Roger was Shanks’s captain and formative influence. Silvers Rayleigh and Scopper Gaban were senior figures during his apprenticeship.

Buggy was Shanks’s fellow apprentice and childhood companion. Although their lives diverge after Gol D. Roger’s death, Shanks continues to treat Buggy with familiarity.

Dracule Mihawk was Shanks’s celebrated swordsmanship rival. Their duels ended after Shanks lost his arm, but the two retain mutual familiarity and respect.

Marshall D. Teach gave Shanks the scars across his left eye and remains one of the few pirates he treats with open concern. Edward Newgate rejects Shanks’s warning about Portgas D. Ace, though both captains recognize the other’s status.
