Teach Marshall

Teach is boisterous, ambitious and opportunistic. He can appear reckless, yet many of his largest moves follow decades of waiting. He joined the Whitebeard Pirates specifically because they offered the best chance of finding the Yami Yami no Mi and acted only when Thatch obtained it.

His belief in fate allows him to accept extreme risk. He experiences pain intensely and sometimes panics when injured, but fear rarely persuades him to abandon an opportunity for power. He moves readily between confidence, cowardice and calculated aggression.

Teach values useful crewmates but does not reproduce Edward Newgate’s paternal family. His crew is held together by shared ambition and benefit, a structure he describes as the basis of piracy.

Teach possesses the Logia-type Yami Yami no Mi, which creates and controls darkness with gravitational properties. It can draw in people and objects, absorb attacks and nullify another Devil Fruit user’s powers through physical contact. Unlike most Logia users, Teach does not become intangible and experiences amplified pain.

After Newgate’s death, Teach acquires the Paramecia-type Gura Gura no Mi through an unexplained process, becoming the only known person to wield two Devil Fruit powers simultaneously. The second fruit allows him to generate devastating earthquakes and shock waves.

Teach has immense physical strength and endurance. He scarred Shanks before obtaining the Yami Yami no Mi, defeated Portgas D. Ace and withstood attacks from several powerful figures. He can use Armament and Observation Haki.

His broader power comes from planning and recruitment. He breaks elite criminals out of Impel Down, conducts a systematic hunt for useful Devil Fruits and expands his territory until the Blackbeard Pirates are recognized as an Emperor’s crew.

Teach spends decades in the Whitebeard Pirates’ second division while searching for the Yami Yami no Mi. He murders Thatch after Thatch finds the fruit, deserts the crew and forms the Blackbeard Pirates.

He defeats Ace and turns him over to the World Government in exchange for appointment as a Warlord. Ace’s capture triggers the Summit War, while Teach uses his new legal status to enter Impel Down and recruit prisoners from Level Six.

At Marineford, Teach and his crew kill Newgate, steal the Gura Gura no Mi and announce the beginning of their era. They later defeat the remaining Whitebeard Pirates in the Payback War and take control of much of Newgate’s former territory.

Teach’s later actions include attacking the Revolutionary Army’s former base, invading Amazon Lily for Boa Hancock’s power and defeating Trafalgar Law’s crew. His subordinates also pursue political leverage through captured Marines and infiltrate strategically important locations.

Newgate accepts Teach as a son and gives him decades of protection. Teach exploits that trust, murders a crewmate and ultimately participates in Newgate’s death. Their opposing ideas of family define the break between the Whitebeard and Blackbeard crews.

Ace hunts Teach to punish Thatch’s murder and defend Newgate’s name. Teach offers Ace a place in his crew before defeating him, suggesting that recruitment and betrayal are equally practical options in his worldview.

Shanks regards Teach as a threat long before the World Government does. Teach gave Shanks the scars over his left eye in an encounter not yet fully shown, and Shanks warns Newgate that Teach had been concealing his true strength.

Laffitte, Jesus Burgess, Van Augur and Doc Q form the core of Teach’s original crew. Shiryu, Catarina Devon, Sanjuan Wolf, Vasco Shot and Avalo Pizarro join through the Impel Down recruitment.

Luffy first meets Teach on Jaya, where their opposing tastes contrast with their shared belief in dreams. Their deeper enmity emerges through Teach’s role in Ace’s capture and his pursuit of the same ultimate prize. Kuzan later becomes captain of Teach’s tenth ship, though the extent of their mutual trust remains unclear.
