Usopp

ウソップ

Story Role

Usopp joins the Straw Hat Pirates after helping stop Kuro’s attack on Syrup Village. His early role combines sniping, invention and maintenance of the Going Merry. He also serves as a storyteller and musician before specialists in several of those areas join the crew.

At Arlong Park, Usopp defeats Chew by overcoming the urge to remain hidden and pretend he has already been incapacitated. In Arabasta, he and Chopper defeat Mr. 4 and Miss Merry Christmas. Usopp continues fighting after severe injuries because his opponents mock Luffy’s dream.

Little Garden gives concrete form to Usopp’s ambition. After meeting Dorry and Brogy, he decides that Elbaf and its warrior culture represent the courage he wants to attain. The island remains important to his personal destination even though his larger dream is internal.

At Skypiea, Usopp acquires dials that reshape his weapons and engineering. He also encounters the Going Merry’s Klabautermann, a manifestation of the ship produced by the crew’s care. The experience reinforces his belief that the vessel is a living companion.

Water 7 brings Usopp’s insecurity into direct conflict with Luffy’s responsibility as captain. After the crew decides that the irreparably damaged Merry must be replaced, Usopp leaves and challenges Luffy to a duel for ownership of the ship. His planning briefly pressures a much stronger opponent, but he loses.

Usopp returns under the identity of Sogeking during the mission to rescue Robin. He burns the World Government’s flag on Luffy’s order and later makes an extreme-distance shot that prevents Robin’s capture. After Enies Lobby, he apologizes for challenging Luffy and formally rejoins the crew before the Going Merry completes its final voyage and is given a funeral at sea.

At Thriller Bark, Usopp’s chronic negativity makes him immune to Perona’s most dangerous power. He defeats her through bluffs, specialized ammunition and an inflatable hammer. Kuma later separates him from the crew at Sabaody and sends him to the Boin Archipelago.

During the two-year interval, Usopp trains with Heracles and converts Pop Greens into a versatile long-range arsenal. He returns physically stronger and initially claims to have overcome his former fear, although familiar anxiety returns once the crew faces genuine New World threats.

In Dressrosa, Usopp becomes central to the operation against Sugar. He first runs from Trebol but returns after hearing the Tontatta dwarves continue to trust him. His accidental defeat of Sugar restores the memories and bodies of everyone transformed into toys, leading the liberated population to call him “God Usopp”.

When Sugar later attempts to attack Luffy and Law from a great distance, Usopp perceives their auras through walls and awakens Observation Haki. His shot prevents the transformation of both alliance leaders and demonstrates that his greatest combat contribution can occur far beyond the range of ordinary fighters.

At Wano, Usopp distributes alliance messages, operates siege weapons and fights during the raid on Onigashima. He helps protect Tama and repeatedly argues that survival is preferable to a glorious but unnecessary death, contrasting his practical fear with Wano’s culture of martyrdom. His bounty rises to five hundred million berries after the alliance’s victory.
