Monkey D. Luffy

モンキー・D・ルフィ

Story Role

Luffy’s East Blue voyage establishes the Straw Hat Pirates through a succession of personal alliances. He frees Zoro from execution, helps Nami escape Arlong’s control and recruits Usopp and Sanji after defending the communities important to them. His victory over Arlong earns his first bounty and identifies him as the East Blue’s most dangerous emerging pirate.

In the first half of the Grand Line, Luffy’s actions repeatedly destabilize government-supported power. He defeats Crocodile in Arabasta, attacks Enies Lobby to recover Robin and survives the destruction of his crew at Sabaody. His assault on a World Noble and participation in the mass escape from Impel Down make him an international threat before he enters the Paramount War.

Luffy reaches Ace at Marineford but cannot prevent Akainu from killing him during the escape. The loss exposes the difference between Luffy’s determination and his actual readiness for the New World. He sends his crew a coded message postponing their reunion and trains under Rayleigh rather than immediately resuming the voyage.

After the two-year interval, Luffy helps prevent a coup on Fish-Man Island, allies with Law and destroys the SMILE production system supporting Kaido. His defeat of Doflamingo inspires seven pirate groups to form the Straw Hat Grand Fleet despite Luffy’s refusal to command them formally. He subsequently invades Big Mom’s territory to retrieve Sanji and escapes after defeating Katakuri.

In Wano, Luffy learns advanced applications of Haki and unites with samurai, pirates, minks and defectors against two Emperors. His Devil Fruit awakens after Kaido deals him an apparently fatal blow, and he defeats Kaido in Gear 5. The World Government responds by naming him one of the Four Emperors and assigning him a three-billion-berry bounty.

The Egghead conflict places Luffy directly between Dr. Vegapunk and the highest authorities of the World Government. His crew attempts to protect Vegapunk while confronting Admiral Kizaru, the Five Elders and a military siege; the resulting broadcast exposes suppressed information about the world’s ancient history. These events further connect Luffy’s personal pursuit of freedom to the unresolved struggle surrounding the Void Century.
