The execution of Ichigo Kurosaki’s friend Rukia Kuchiki has begun, yet Ichigo is nowhere in sight. Within moments, the power of one million zanpakutō will strike Rukia as punishment for transferring her Soul Reaper powers to a human.
As dissent spreads among the Gotei 13, Rukia’s remaining allies race toward the execution grounds. Ichigo must complete his training and arrive before the Sōkyoku carries out her sentence.
Rukia is brought before the Sōkyoku and prepares to accept her execution after asking Shigekuni Genryūsai Yamamoto to spare her friends. When the enormous execution weapon is released, Ichigo arrives and blocks its attack. Jūshirō Ukitake and Shunsui Kyōraku then use the Shihōin clan’s shield to destroy the Sōkyoku’s scaffold and prevent another strike.
Ichigo frees Rukia and entrusts her to Renji Abarai, who begins carrying her away from the execution grounds. Ichigo remains behind and defeats several lieutenants before confronting Byakuya Kuchiki, beginning the battle that will decide whether Rukia can escape.
Elsewhere, Ukitake and Kyōraku face Yamamoto for opposing the execution. Yoruichi Shihōin confronts Soi Fon, her former subordinate and successor as commander of the Stealth Force. Their high-speed battle exposes Soi Fon’s resentment toward Yoruichi for abandoning the Soul Society a century earlier.
