After risking everything to save his brother, Monkey D. Luffy is devastated when Ace dies in his arms. As the surviving pirates attempt to escape Marineford, Whitebeard makes his final stand against the Navy and the Blackbeard Pirates.
The war's conclusion sends shock waves across the world and signals the beginning of a turbulent new era. While Luffy is carried away from the battlefield, the story turns toward the aftermath of the conflict and his childhood with Ace and a third boy named Sabo.
Portogas D. Ace dies protecting Luffy from Akainu, leaving his brother incapacitated by grief. Edward Newgate attacks the Admiral and divides Marineford to protect his retreating forces, but the arrival of Marshall D. Teach and his newly expanded crew brings another threat. Whitebeard is overwhelmed and dies standing after confirming that the One Piece exists, while Blackbeard somehow acquires his earthquake-producing power.
As the battle descends into further bloodshed, Trafalgar Law rescues Luffy and Jinbe. Koby pleads for the needless killing to stop, and Shanks arrives with the Red Hair Pirates to end the war. The Navy accepts his intervention, allowing both sides to recover their dead and withdraw.
The world reacts to the deaths of Ace and Whitebeard, the rise of Blackbeard, and the destabilization of Whitebeard's former territories. Luffy awakens on Amazon Lily but is consumed by grief. His memories return to his childhood, when Garp placed him in the care of Curly Dadan and he struggled to befriend Ace, who was secretly gathering treasure with Sabo in preparation for their future as pirates.
