Koby

Koby is compassionate, conscientious and initially timid. His courage develops through action rather than a sudden disappearance of fear; he repeatedly speaks despite knowing that doing so may bring punishment or death.

He believes the Marines should protect civilians and prevent needless casualties. This conviction drives him to challenge Sakazuki at Marineford and later to offer himself in exchange for hundreds of captured personnel.

Koby remains modest despite growing fame. He is embarrassed by the title “Hero” and credits others readily, but his hesitation no longer prevents decisive action when people depend on him.

Koby is trained by Garp in physical combat and Haki. He learns Soru, one of the Six Powers, and develops speed, strength and endurance far beyond his abilities at enlistment.

His Observation Haki awakens during the Summit War, where he becomes overwhelmed by the voices of people dying across the battlefield. It later develops enough for him to detect threats over great distances, including an underwater torpedo aimed at a ship.

Koby uses Armament Haki and Garp’s battleship-bag training. At Hachinosu, Honesty Impact releases an enormous Haki-infused punch that destroys Avalo Pizarro’s island-sized arm and prevents it from crushing an escaping Marine vessel.

His operational abilities include underwater movement, command and negotiation. Cross Guild assigns him a five-star bounty worth approximately 500,000,000 berries because of his rank, reputation and SWORD membership.

Koby is the first person Luffy befriends after leaving Foosha Village. He escapes Alvida, travels with Luffy to Shells Town and helps expose Captain Morgan’s abuses before joining the Marines with Helmeppo.

Garp takes the two recruits to Marine headquarters and subjects them to intensive training. Koby later reunites with Luffy after Enies Lobby, now physically transformed and advancing toward his goal.

At Marineford, Koby’s Observation Haki awakens amid mass casualties. He blocks Sakazuki’s path and begs both sides to stop wasting lives; the seconds created by his stand help Shanks arrive and end the war.

Koby becomes known as a hero after the Rocky Port Incident, where he protects civilians and assists Blackbeard against Wang Zhi. He later participates in the operation against Amazon Lily and surrenders himself to protect other Marines.

The Blackbeard Pirates imprison him on Hachinosu. Garp leads a rescue force, and Koby ultimately destroys Pizarro’s giant arm so the escaping ship can depart, while Garp remains behind.

Monkey D. Luffy is Koby’s first true friend and the person who gives him courage to pursue his dream. They stand on opposing sides of the law but retain mutual respect.

Helmeppo begins as Koby’s antagonist and becomes his closest friend and training partner. Their shared development from privileged or powerless youths into committed officers binds their careers together.

Monkey D. Garp is Koby’s mentor. He recognizes Koby’s potential, trains him personally and later risks his life to rescue him from Hachinosu.

Alvida enslaves Koby as a chore boy for two years. His decision to denounce her cruelty is the first major act of courage in his story.

Hibari, Prince Grus and Kujaku are fellow SWORD personnel who participate in his rescue. Boa Hancock opposes his Amazon Lily mission, while Marshall D. Teach hopes to use him as leverage in negotiations with the World Government.
