Ichigo Kurosaki’s recent battles with the Arrancar have proven that he must become stronger if he hopes to protect his friends. The only way forward is to control the inner Hollow threatening to consume him, and the Visored—former Soul Reapers who have acquired Hollow powers—may be the only people capable of teaching him how.
Before Ichigo can begin mastering that power, however, he must confront his Hollow self in a battle fought within his own soul. With control of Ichigo’s body and identity at stake, only one of them can emerge as the dominant force.
Determined to control the Hollow within him, Ichigo enters the Visoreds’ underground base and demands their assistance. Shinji Hirako agrees to train him, but the other Visoreds first test Ichigo’s determination and combat ability. After proving that he will not retreat, Ichigo is placed under a barrier and sent into his inner world, where he must subdue his Hollow before it completely transforms his physical body.
Inside his soul, Ichigo confronts the white-clad manifestation that previously seized control during his battle with Byakuya. The Hollow overwhelms him while explaining that instinct, rather than technique or reason, determines which of them is fit to rule. Ichigo eventually recognizes that his hesitation and fear of battle have weakened him. By recovering his resolve, he defeats the Hollow and reclaims control of Zangetsu, though the Hollow warns that it will return if Ichigo shows weakness again.
Outside the barrier, Ichigo’s transformed body attacks the Visoreds until he regains consciousness wearing a Hollow mask. His initial success marks only the beginning of his training, as he must now learn to summon and maintain the mask voluntarily.
