Inside this volume
Pirate life is proving every bit as dangerous as Monkey D. Luffy imagined. With his first crewmate beside him and a gifted navigator entering the picture, Luffy sails onward in search of the legendary One Piece. The journey quickly leads the fledgling crew into Orange Town, where a flamboyant pirate captain with a terrifying reputation has seized control.
The second volume of One Piece expands the world of the Grand Line's future challengers by introducing new allies, memorable enemies, and the first true test of the Straw Hat Pirates as a crew. It explores the importance of trust, freedom, and loyalty while continuing the foundation of Luffy's adventure.
After leaving Shells Town, Luffy and Zoro Roronoa continue searching for companions and a proper navigator. Their journey reunites them with Nami, a talented thief who specializes in stealing from pirates. Although Nami agrees to cooperate with them, she makes it clear that she has no intention of becoming a pirate herself.
The trio arrives at Orange Town, a community occupied by the Buggy Pirates. Its eccentric captain, Buggy, possesses the powers of the Chop-Chop Fruit, making him an unusual and dangerous opponent. As Luffy and his companions become involved in the conflict, they also meet the town's remaining residents, who refuse to abandon their homes despite the destruction surrounding them.
Among those residents is Chouchou, a loyal dog protecting his late master's pet food store. His unwavering devotion leaves a strong impression on Luffy and reinforces one of the series' recurring themes: treasures are not always measured by wealth, but by the memories and promises attached to them.
The volume concludes with Luffy confronting Buggy directly while Nami begins to reconsider her opinion of him. The Straw Hat crew takes another important step toward becoming a true pirate crew as they overcome their first major enemy together.
