Chouchou

Chouchou is exceptionally loyal and stubborn. After Hocker leaves the pet-food shop in his care, the dog continues guarding it regardless of the danger around him. He refuses to evacuate with the rest of Orange Town and repeatedly confronts opponents much larger than himself rather than surrender the place he associates with his owner.

He can be aggressive toward strangers, initially biting Monkey D. Luffy and even swallowing the key needed to free him from his cage. Chouchou nevertheless recognizes kindness and develops trust in Luffy after the pirate understands why the shop matters to him.

Chouchou is an ordinary dog without supernatural powers, but he possesses unusual courage and endurance for his size. His principal means of fighting is biting, which he uses against both people and larger animals.

His determination is more notable than his physical strength. Chouchou attempts to fight Mohji and the enormous lion Richie despite being badly outmatched. He survives their assault and continues trying to defend the shop even after sustaining injuries.

Chouchou appears during the Orange Town Arc after Luffy, Nami, and Roronoa Zoro encounter him beside the pet-food shop. Mayor Boodle explains that the store belonged to Chouchou's master, Hocker, and that the dog has continued guarding it after his owner failed to return.

When Mohji and Richie raid the shop, Chouchou tries unsuccessfully to stop them. After Richie destroys the store, Luffy defeats him and Mohji and retrieves the only surviving package of pet food for Chouchou. The gesture earns Chouchou's trust.

Later, when Orange Town's residents mistakenly turn against the Straw Hats, Chouchou deliberately blocks the townspeople from pursuing them, allowing Luffy and his companions to leave. Two years later, the rebuilt town features a much larger pet-food shop bearing Chouchou's name as well as a statue honoring him.

Hocker is Chouchou's owner and the person most responsible for his defining loyalty. Chouchou remains devoted to the pet-food shop Hocker entrusted to him, regarding it as an irreplaceable reminder of their life together.

Boodle, the mayor of Orange Town and Hocker's friend, looks after Chouchou and regularly brings him food. He understands why the dog refuses to leave the shop and respects his determination to protect it.

Monkey D. Luffy initially clashes with Chouchou but quickly understands the significance of the shop to him. After avenging the shop's destruction and salvaging food for Chouchou, Luffy earns the dog's trust and gratitude.

Mohji and Richie are Chouchou's enemies during the Buggy Pirates' occupation of Orange Town. Chouchou attacks them when they threaten his master's property despite being overwhelmingly outmatched.
