All-out war has broken out between the Whitebeard Pirates and the Navy. Whitebeard's crew is said to be the most powerful in the New World, but its forces face the Navy Admirals and the remaining Warlords of the Sea. Meanwhile, Monkey D. Luffy races toward Navy Headquarters in the hope of reaching his brother before the execution can be carried out.
Edward Newgate launches the Whitebeard Pirates' assault on Marineford to rescue Portogas D. Ace, using the Tremor-Tremor Fruit to create enormous tsunamis around the stronghold. The three Navy Admirals counterattack, while Whitebeard's division commanders and allied captains engage the assembled Marines and Warlords. The conflict rapidly demonstrates the destructive abilities of both sides, with Marco and Jozu challenging the Admirals and Little Oars Jr. advancing toward the execution platform despite concentrated resistance.
Luffy and the Impel Down escapees eventually fall into the center of the battlefield. After declaring his intention to save Ace, Luffy presses forward alongside Jinbe, Emporio Ivankov, Crocodile, and their improvised alliance. Whitebeard recognizes Luffy's determination and orders his forces to support him, while the Warlords and Navy officers repeatedly attempt to stop his advance.
As the battle intensifies, the Navy begins implementing a larger strategy designed to trap and destroy Whitebeard's forces. Admiral Akainu manipulates allied captain Squard by exploiting his hatred of Gol D. Roger, leading Squard to believe that Whitebeard has betrayed his allies and setting the stage for a devastating act of treachery.
