Crocodile

Crocodile is controlled, calculating and deeply cynical. He assumes that alliances will collapse under pressure and regards trust as a weakness, even while building an organization whose members know little about one another. His plans employ misinformation, scarcity and political resentment rather than relying solely on force.

He rarely loses his composure, but challenges to his competence provoke intense anger. His confidence is reinforced by years of experience as a pirate and Warlord, though it initially leaves him unable to accept that a relatively unknown opponent could defeat him.

Crocodile’s behavior at Marineford is more flexible than his earlier conduct in Arabasta. He cooperates temporarily with former enemies when their goals align and intervenes against both pirates and Marines according to his own interests. The change does not make him benevolent; it shows his capacity to adapt.

The Logia-type Suna Suna no Mi allows Crocodile to transform into sand, produce sandstorms and drain moisture from living beings or the surrounding ground. He can erode stone, desiccate vegetation and create cutting blades of compressed sand. Water or other liquids cause his sand to cohere, allowing his physical body to be struck without Haki.

Crocodile’s left hook conceals additional weapons, including a poisoned hook and a hidden blade. He possesses exceptional endurance and recovers quickly from severe injuries during the escape from Impel Down and the fighting at Marineford.

He commands extensive criminal and political resources. As Mr. 0, he directs agents including Daz Bonez, Nico Robin and Bentham without revealing his identity to most of the organization. After the abolition of the Seven Warlords, his alliance with Mihawk gives Cross Guild much of its actual military and financial authority.

Crocodile is the principal antagonist of the Arabasta saga. He engineers a drought with Dance Powder, frames King Nefertari Cobra and encourages rebels and royal troops to destroy one another. His public acts against pirates preserve his reputation as Arabasta’s heroic protector.

Monkey D. Luffy loses to Crocodile twice before discovering how to strike his sand body. Luffy defeats him beneath Alubarna, exposing Baroque Works and ending the rebellion. The World Government revokes Crocodile’s Warlord title and imprisons him in Impel Down.

Crocodile joins the mass escape from Impel Down because he wants to participate in the Summit War. At Marineford he attacks Edward Newgate, clashes with Doflamingo and protects Luffy from several threats. He later enters the New World with Daz Bonez.

Crocodile subsequently proposes an organization with Dracule Mihawk that becomes Cross Guild after Buggy is mistakenly presented as its leader. Cross Guild places bounties on Marines, reversing the World Government’s traditional bounty system.

Robin serves as Crocodile’s partner, Miss All Sunday, because she can read Poneglyphs. Both expect betrayal: Crocodile plans to kill her once she has translated Arabasta’s stone, while Robin conceals what it says about Pluton.

Luffy is the first opponent shown overcoming Crocodile after multiple defeats. Crocodile initially dismisses him as an inexperienced pirate, but their encounters at Impel Down and Marineford establish a grudging recognition of Luffy’s disruptive power.

Daz Bonez is Crocodile’s most dependable subordinate. Unlike the compartmentalized Baroque Works agents, Daz follows him into imprisonment, escapes beside him and remains at his side in the New World.

Crocodile bears an old grudge against Newgate, who defeated him earlier in his career. Emporio Ivankov knows an unspecified secret from Crocodile’s past and uses it to ensure his cooperation during the Impel Down escape. Mihawk later becomes his business partner, while Buggy’s accidental elevation over them produces an openly hostile working arrangement.
