When the Straw Hats encounter a mysterious barrel on the open sea, they have no idea that it is a trap. After losing control of the Thousand Sunny, the crew is steered toward Thriller Bark. Any rational sailor would think twice before going ashore on an island filled with zombies, but with Monkey D. Luffy at the helm, the Straw Hats soon become the targets of the dreaded Gecko Moria.
On Banaro Island, Portogas D. Ace confronts Teach Marshall over the murder of a Whitebeard commander. Teach reveals the destructive power of the Dark-Dark Fruit and invites Ace to join his crew, but Ace refuses, leading the two pirates into a consequential battle. Elsewhere, the Straw Hats enter the Florian Triangle and encounter Brook, a living skeleton whose soul returned to his body through the Revive-Revive Fruit. Although he accepts Luffy's invitation to join the crew, Brook cannot leave the fog because his stolen shadow makes sunlight fatal to him.
The Thousand Sunny is trapped inside Thriller Bark, an enormous island-like ship populated by zombies. Nami, Usopp, and Tony Tony Chopper reach the mansion of the celebrated surgeon Hogback, where they meet his hostile servant Victoria Cindry and discover animated corpses throughout the building.
The remaining Straw Hats explore the surrounding graveyard and learn that numerous visitors have had their shadows stolen. Brook identifies Moria, one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, as the man responsible. As Hogback joins Absalom and Perona in preparing Thriller Bark's forces, the crew realizes that the apparent ghost island is an organized stronghold designed to turn its victims into new zombies.
