The battle between Monkey D. Luffy and CP9 agent Lucci Rob escalates while the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates attempt to escape through the Gates of Justice. A fleet of warships dispatched by Marine Headquarters soon arrives and begins bombarding Enies Lobby, leaving the crew little time to escape before the island is destroyed.
The Buster Call fleet surrounds Enies Lobby and begins indiscriminately bombarding the judicial island. While Robin Nico, Franky, and the other Straw Hats search for an escape route, Luffy continues his exhausting battle against Lucci. He unveils Gear Three, temporarily enlarging his bones to deliver giant-scale attacks, but Lucci survives and drives him to the limits of his endurance.
Usopp reveals himself to Luffy and urges him to rise for the crew's sake. Luffy responds with a final Gear Two assault and defeats Lucci, but the surrounding Marine fleet prepares to eliminate the exhausted pirates. As every apparent escape route collapses, the Straw Hats hear a familiar voice calling from the sea below and discover that the Going Merry has crossed Aqua Laguna to rescue them.
The crew escapes aboard the Merry and reunites with the Franky Family and Galley-La shipwrights. However, the vessel begins breaking apart during the return journey. Recognizing that the ship can sail no farther, the Straw Hats give the Merry a Viking funeral. As the flames consume their longtime home, the ship's spirit apologizes for being unable to carry them onward, while the crew tearfully thanks it for their adventures together.
