Inside this volume
One Piece Vol. 16: Carrying on His Will continues the Drum Island Arc as Monkey D. Luffy and his friends become involved in the island's struggle against the returning tyrant Wapol. While Nami recovers under the care of Dr. Kureha, the crew learns the tragic history of her assistant, Tony Tony Chopper, and the legacy left behind by the island's beloved doctor.
Blending emotional storytelling with action, the volume explores themes of acceptance, inherited ideals, and the meaning of true compassion. As Wapol's forces threaten Drum Island once again, Chopper must decide whether to leave behind the only home he has ever known.
Quick Facts
After reaching the summit of Drum Rock, Monkey D. Luffy entrusts Nami to the care of Dr. Kureha, whose assistant is revealed to be the blue-nosed reindeer Tony Tony Chopper. Although Chopper initially fears humans because of the prejudice he has experienced throughout his life, he gradually warms to the Straw Hat Pirates.
Through Kureha's recollections, Chopper's past is revealed. After eating the Human-Human Fruit, he was rejected by both humans and reindeer until he was taken in by the quack doctor Hiluluk. Despite having no formal medical training, Hiriluk devoted his life to helping others and inspired Chopper to believe that no disease is incurable. Following Hiriluk's death, Kureha completed Chopper's medical education while continuing to honor her former colleague's ideals.
Meanwhile, Wapol returns to Drum Castle with his followers, prompting Dalton and the island's citizens to resist his attempt to reclaim the kingdom. As fighting erupts across the island, Luffy heads toward the castle to confront Wapol and defend the people who sheltered his crew.
The volume concludes with Chopper overcoming his hesitation and preparing to fight alongside the Straw Hat Pirates, determined to protect the ideals inherited from Hiriluk.
