Following Bartholomew Kuma's intervention at Sabaody, the Straw Hat Pirates are scattered across the globe. Luffy awakens on Amazon Lily, an isolated island inhabited by the Kuja tribe, where men are forbidden. Initially viewed as an intruder, he repeatedly demonstrates his compassion and courage, gradually earning the respect of the island's warriors despite the danger his presence poses to them.
Luffy is eventually brought before Boa Hancock, the Pirate Empress and ruler of Amazon Lily. Although Hancock initially intends to execute him, Luffy's refusal to exploit her personal secrets and his instinctive sense of justice begin to change her opinion. During their confrontation, Luffy unconsciously displays an exceptionally rare form of Haki, astonishing the Kuja and revealing qualities associated with only a handful of the world's greatest leaders.
As Hancock's past and the history of the Kuja become clearer, Luffy learns of the suffering endured by the island's rulers under the World Nobles. Recognizing his character, Hancock agrees to aid him in leaving the island. At the same time, news spreads across the world that Portogas D. Ace is to be publicly executed, setting Luffy on a desperate new course.
