Luffy's desperate rescue mission reaches its lowest point inside the underwater prison Impel Down. After suffering a devastating defeat at the hands of the prison's chief warden, he is left on the brink of death. As the time remaining before Ace's execution rapidly disappears, unexpected allies emerge to offer Luffy one final chance to continue his fight.
Luffy's attempt to force his way through Impel Down comes to a disastrous end when Magellan's venom overwhelms him, leaving him fatally poisoned. Refusing to abandon his friend, Bentham carries Luffy through the frozen wastes of Level 5 and searches for the hidden refuge known as New Kama Land. There, the revolutionary Emporio Ivankov begins an extraordinary treatment that gives Luffy a slim chance of survival at the cost of years of his lifespan.
While Luffy recovers, Bon Clay and Ivankov prepare the prison's hidden resistance for a renewed escape attempt. Meanwhile, Ace is transferred from Impel Down toward Marineford, making Luffy's rescue mission increasingly urgent. Deep within the prison, Level 6 is revealed to contain legendary criminals whose existence has been erased from history by the World Government.
Having survived Ivankov's treatment through sheer determination, Luffy resumes his descent into the prison alongside his growing alliance of former enemies. With Ace already removed from his cell and the execution drawing ever closer, the mission changes from a prison break into a desperate race to reach Marineford before it is too late.
