As Enel gathers the power needed to destroy Skypiea, Wiper recalls the history behind the Shandians' struggle. Four centuries earlier, explorer Norland Montblanc arrived on Jaya and saved the Shandian people from a deadly epidemic. His actions initially brought him into conflict with their warrior leader, Kalgara, because the cure required destroying trees regarded as sacred.

Noland and Kalgara eventually became close friends, and Noland learned that the Shandians had protected the golden city of Shandora and its Poneglyph for generations. Before returning home, he promised to visit again, while Kalgara vowed to keep Shandora's bell ringing as a beacon. Soon afterward, the Knock Up Stream hurled part of Jaya into the sky, separating the two men and leaving Noland unable to prove that the city existed when he returned with his king.

In the present, Luffy learns that ringing the golden bell would both fulfill the Shandians' ancient promise and tell Cricket Montblanc that Noland spoke the truth. As Eneru forms a massive sphere of thunderclouds over Skypiea, the island's inhabitants unite in prayer. Assisted by Nami, Luffy begins climbing Giant Jack toward the Ark Maxim and the bell above Shandora.
