Z is stern, charismatic, and deeply committed to his personal concept of justice. As a Marine instructor he was respected by students and believed strongly in protecting civilians from pirates.

Years of personal loss and disillusionment gradually turn that idealism into extremism. By Film Z, he views the destruction of pirates as worth catastrophic collateral consequences, yet traces of the teacher admired by his former students remain visible.

Z is an exceptionally powerful veteran fighter. He is an expert in Armament Haki and earned the epithet "Black Arm" through his mastery of hardening his arms during combat.

After losing an arm, he receives the Battle Smasher, an enormous mechanical prosthetic incorporating powerful weaponry and Seastone. He combines it with tremendous physical strength, Haki, and decades of combat experience.

Z leads the Neo Marines in an operation targeting the New World's End Points. His plan threatens pirates on an unprecedented scale while also endangering countless civilians.

The Straw Hats become involved after encountering him, eventually discovering that his crusade is rooted in a long and painful history with both pirates and the Marines.

Ain and Bins are Z's closest Neo Marine officers and former students. Both remain intensely loyal to him.

Kuzan, Borsalino, Sakazuki, and numerous other Marines belong to generations shaped by Z's career as an instructor. Monkey D. Luffy becomes his principal opponent during Film Z.
