Garp

Garp is loud, impulsive and frequently irreverent toward authority. He falls asleep during important conversations, laughs at his family’s crimes and speaks to superiors with a freedom few Marines possess. Beneath that informality lies a strong commitment to protecting civilians and training the next generation.

He repeatedly refuses promotion to admiral because the position would place him directly under the Celestial Dragons. Remaining a vice admiral gives him greater independence while preserving his ability to operate within the Marines.

Garp’s approach to family is affectionate but harsh. He subjects Luffy and Ace to dangerous survival training because he wants them to become Marines. At Marineford, his institutional duty and love for Ace leave him emotionally divided, exposing the limits of the justice he has served.

Garp possesses overwhelming physical strength without relying on a Devil Fruit. He trains by punching decommissioned battleships without Haki, throws cannonballs by hand and uses naval vessels as projectiles.

His Armament Haki is exceptionally advanced, while his Supreme King Haki can be projected into attacks without direct contact. Galaxy Impact releases a vast Haki-infused blow over a wide area; Blue Hole drives an opponent deep into the ground; and Galaxy Divide cleaves through a massive structure with concentrated force.

In his prime, Garp repeatedly cornered Roger and fought beside him against the Rocks Pirates. Even in old age, he remains capable of overwhelming senior pirate officers and moving with speed that surprises younger combatants.

Garp is also an influential instructor. Koby, Helmeppo and Kuzan develop under his guidance, though Kuzan follows a very different path after leaving the Marines.

Garp first appears prominently in the cover story following Koby and Helmeppo. He takes responsibility for the two young Marines after Morgan’s escape and personally trains them at Marine headquarters.

After Enies Lobby, he visits Luffy and reveals his family connection to Dragon. His casual disclosure brings Luffy’s lineage into the open while establishing Garp’s refusal to treat his grandson as a conventional enemy.

At Marineford, Garp sits beside Ace at the execution platform. He allows Luffy to strike him aside rather than decisively stop him, then has to be restrained by Sengoku after Sakazuki kills Ace. He steps back from active front-line duty after the war but continues training Marines.

When Koby is captured by the Blackbeard Pirates, Garp leads an unauthorized rescue force to Hachinosu. He remains behind so the younger Marines can escape, is wounded by Shiryu while protecting Koby and is ultimately surrounded by Kuzan and the island’s captains. His exact fate remains unconfirmed.

Roger is Garp’s greatest pirate rival. Their repeated battles produce mutual respect, and Roger entrusts his unborn child to Garp before his execution. Garp protects Ace despite insisting that he still regards Roger as a criminal.

Luffy is Garp’s grandson and a continuing source of frustration and pride. Garp attempts to force him toward a Marine career but cannot suppress the influence of Shanks or Luffy’s own ambitions.

Ace is placed in Garp’s care and later raised alongside Luffy by Curly Dadan. Garp loves him as family, but his decision to remain at the execution becomes one of his deepest personal failures. Dadan attacks Garp afterward, and he accepts her anger without defending himself.

Koby is Garp’s foremost student among the current generation. Garp risks his life at Hachinosu because he regards Koby as the future of the Marines. Helmeppo receives the same early training and becomes a loyal companion to Koby.

Sengoku is Garp’s longtime colleague and the superior most capable of managing his behavior. Kuzan trains under Garp before becoming an admiral; their later confrontation places teacher and former student on opposing sides.
