Higuma

Higuma is violent, boastful and contemptuous of anyone who refuses to fear him. He invokes his bounty and killings as proof of status, treating intimidation as a substitute for genuine authority.

His confidence depends on controlling the situation. When the Red Hair Pirates effortlessly defeat his men, Higuma abandons his bravado and uses a smoke bomb to flee with Luffy as a hostage.

He fundamentally misreads Shanks’s restraint. The pirate captain’s willingness to ignore spilled drinks convinces Higuma that he is harmless, while the later threat to Luffy reveals the boundary Shanks will not overlook.

Higuma carries a sword and is willing to use it against unarmed targets. His eight-million-berry bounty indicates that the World Government considered his crimes significant within the local East Blue context.

He also carries smoke bombs, one of which allows him to escape temporarily from the Red Hair Pirates. Beyond these tools and ordinary physical strength, he demonstrates no supernatural abilities or advanced combat techniques.

Higuma’s band numbers several armed men, but they are quickly defeated when facing experienced pirates. His reputation therefore exceeds the ability shown during his sole major confrontation.

Higuma enters Partys Bar after Shanks’s crew has consumed most of its sake. When Shanks offers him the remaining bottle, Higuma smashes it over him and leaves after insulting the pirates.

Luffy later confronts the bandits for insulting Shanks. Higuma threatens the child, prompting the Red Hair Pirates to intervene and eliminate his gang.

Higuma escapes with Luffy and takes a boat offshore, where he throws the boy into the sea. The Lord of the Coast devours Higuma, then turns toward Luffy. Shanks saves Luffy but loses his left arm to the creature.

The incident teaches Luffy that piracy carries mortal risk and establishes the promise symbolized by Shanks’s straw hat.

Shanks is the pirate Higuma attempts to humiliate. Higuma interprets his restraint as cowardice and discovers too late that Shanks treats threats against a friend differently from insults against himself.

Monkey D. Luffy provokes Higuma after defending Shanks’s honor. Higuma kidnaps him as a hostage and nearly causes his death at sea.

Lucky Roux kills one of Higuma’s men when the bandits threaten violence, while Ben Beckman defeats the remaining gang members with little effort.

Lord of the Coast kills Higuma after his escape from shore, ending the bandit’s role moments before the creature attacks Luffy.
