In the Land of Waves, Naruto Uzumaki and his teammates continue their desperate effort to protect bridge builder Tazuna and his family from the forces employed by Gatō. After Sasuke Uchiha falls while shielding Naruto, the young ninja draws upon a frightening reserve of power and confronts Haku with overwhelming fury.

The battle forces Naruto to decide what protecting a precious person truly means, while Kakashi Hatake and Zabuza Momochi bring their own duel to its conclusion. After Team 7 returns to the Hidden Leaf Village, the announcement of the Chūnin Exams introduces Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura Haruno to a wider and more dangerous generation of young ninja.

Believing Sasuke has been killed, Naruto releases the Nine-Tailed Fox’s chakra and overwhelms Haku. His rage subsides when Haku’s mask breaks and Naruto recognizes the compassionate youth he previously met in the forest. Haku asks Naruto to kill him after concluding that he can no longer serve Zabuza, but abandons that request upon sensing that his master is in danger.

Haku sacrifices himself to shield Zabuza from Kakashi’s Lightning Blade. Gatō then arrives with hired mercenaries, reveals that he intended to dispose of Zabuza, and desecrates Haku’s body. Moved by Naruto’s condemnation, the mortally wounded Zabuza kills Gatō before dying beside Haku. Inspired by Team 7 and Inari, the people of the Land of Waves confront Gatō’s remaining men, allowing Tazuna’s bridge to be completed and named in Naruto’s honor.

After returning to Konoha, Team 7 learns that Kakashi has recommended its members for the Chūnin Exams. Naruto and Sasuke welcome the opportunity, while Sakura privately doubts whether she is prepared. The arrival of ninja from other villages brings them into conflict with the Sand Siblings, and their journey to the examination hall introduces several formidable competitors from the Hidden Leaf.
