The Chūnin Exams bring together young ninja from the Hidden Leaf Village and neighboring lands, offering Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno their first opportunity to advance beyond the rank of genin. Before the examination can begin, however, Team 7 encounters an exceptionally skilled older student whose speed challenges Sasuke’s confidence in his own abilities.

The opening written test appears impossibly difficult, placing contestants under pressure to obtain information without exposing themselves. Because each three-person squad advances or fails together, Naruto’s inability to answer the questions threatens the prospects of his entire team. The examination ultimately tests more than academic knowledge, demanding discipline, intelligence, and the courage to accept an uncertain future.

As Team 7 approaches the Chūnin Exam application room, Rock Lee challenges Sasuke in order to test himself against the Uchiha clan’s reputed strength. Lee’s extraordinary taijutsu overwhelms Sasuke despite the Sharingan, but their confrontation is interrupted before Lee can complete his strongest technique. The encounter reveals that the examinations have attracted competitors whose experience and specialization exceed those of Konoha’s newest genin.

Inside the examination hall, Team 7 reunites with former academy classmates and meets entrants from several other villages. Kabuto Yakushi, an experienced examinee, uses information cards to explain the abilities and backgrounds of notable competitors. His display provokes a group of Hidden Sound ninja, demonstrating that hostilities have already begun before the formal testing.

The first examiner, Ibiki Morino, presents an unusually difficult written test governed by strict anti-cheating rules. Most entrants gradually realize that they are expected to gather answers covertly. Naruto answers nothing but refuses to withdraw when the final question threatens permanent disqualification from future exams. His resolve steadies the remaining candidates, and Ibiki reveals that this willingness to risk an uncertain future was the true test.
