Background
Background
Kakashi is the only known child of Sakumo Hatake, a renowned Konohagakure shinobi whose abilities were compared with those of the legendary Sannin. Sakumo abandoned a mission to save his teammates, but the mission’s failure brought public condemnation, including criticism from the people he had rescued. Sakumo died by suicide, leaving the young Kakashi to conclude that rules and successful missions had to take precedence over comrades.
A prodigy, Kakashi entered the Academy early, graduated at five and became a chūnin at six. He joined a team led by Minato Namikaze alongside Obito Uchiha and Rin Nohara. Kakashi and Obito frequently argued: Kakashi considered Obito unreliable and undisciplined, while Obito rejected Kakashi’s rigid devotion to regulations.
During the Third Shinobi World War, Minato promoted Kakashi to jōnin and assigned him command of a mission to destroy the Kannabi Bridge. When Rin was captured, Kakashi initially chose to continue the mission rather than rescue her. Obito’s insistence that those who abandon comrades are “worse than scum” persuaded him to reconsider. During the rescue, Kakashi lost his left eye, and a mortally injured Obito gave him his newly awakened Sharingan as a promotion gift.
Kakashi later served in the Anbu under the Fourth and Third Hokage. The period intensified his emotional isolation, particularly after Rin deliberately intercepted Kakashi’s Chidori so that the Three-Tails sealed inside her would not be released in Konoha. Minato eventually removed him from the Anbu and recommended that he become a jōnin instructor, placing him in a role where his experience could protect younger shinobi from repeating his losses.
Personality
Personality
Kakashi appears relaxed, detached and habitually late. He invents implausible excuses for his tardiness, reads during conversations and speaks without much visible urgency. Much of this behaviour masks constant observation: he assesses opponents, students and terrain even when he seems distracted.
His standards for teamwork are uncompromising. Kakashi repeatedly fails prospective genin teams whose members prioritize individual success over cooperation. His bell test deliberately presents an impossible competition so that students must recognize the test’s hidden purpose and act collectively.
Kakashi’s composure is rooted partly in emotional suppression. He visits the Memorial Stone to remember fallen comrades and carries persistent guilt over Obito and Rin. His lateness is commonly connected to these visits, though he rarely explains the grief underlying the habit.
In battle, Kakashi is pragmatic and capable of lethal force, but he avoids unnecessary cruelty. He accepts responsibility for his students’ safety and acknowledges his own mistakes. His understated humour, fondness for teasing and enthusiasm for Jiraiya’s romantic novels coexist with a strong sense of duty.
As he grows older, Kakashi becomes more willing to rely on others. He retains the strategic caution of his youth without its inflexible attitude toward rules. His leadership increasingly emphasizes trust, shared responsibility and the preservation of the next generation.
Appearance
Appearance

Kakashi has spiky silver hair, dark eyes and a narrow scar running vertically over his left eye. He wears a dark mask over the lower half of his face almost continuously. His forehead protector is tilted to cover the Sharingan when it is not in use, preventing the eye from consuming chakra unnecessarily.
His standard attire consists of a dark long-sleeved shirt, matching trousers, fingerless gloves and Konohagakure’s green flak jacket. A red spiral appears on each upper sleeve. He also carries a small pouch and the usual shinobi tools.
As a child, Kakashi wears variations of dark clothing with protective arm guards. After receiving Obito’s eye, he begins covering it with his forehead protector. During his Anbu service, he wears the organization’s gray armor, arm guards, distinctive tattoo and a fox-shaped mask marked in red and black.
When the mask is removed, Kakashi has a small mole below the left side of his mouth. The manga initially concealed his full face even in comedy stories devoted to Team 7’s attempts to see it. His appearance is eventually revealed through bonus material and an anime adaptation in which he uses the disguise “Sukea.”
As Hokage, Kakashi wears the formal white-and-red robes and hat of the office. After leaving the position, he returns to clothing resembling his familiar jōnin uniform, though without the Sharingan and the need to cover his left eye.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Kakashi is proficient across nearly every major branch of shinobi combat. He combines ninjutsu, taijutsu, genjutsu, weapons and deception with unusually fast analysis. Rather than overpowering every opponent directly, he identifies habits and weaknesses, creates misleading patterns and commits to an attack after limiting the enemy’s responses.
His chakra natures include Lightning, Earth, Water, Fire and Wind Release, as well as Yin and Yang Release. He is most closely associated with Lightning Release and can perform water techniques without a nearby source. Earth Style techniques allow him to travel underground, erect walls or immobilize enemies.
Kakashi received the Sharingan as a transplant rather than inheriting it. The eye lets him perceive chakra, anticipate movement, reproduce observable techniques and cast genjutsu, earning him the name Copy Ninja Kakashi. Because his body is not Uchiha, he cannot deactivate it and suffers heavy chakra expenditure while using it.
His signature technique is the Lightning Cutter, a refined form of the Chidori. The attack concentrates lightning chakra in one hand for a high-speed thrust. The Sharingan compensates for the tunnel vision created by the charge, allowing Kakashi to respond to counterattacks.
Kakashi is also a skilled summoner whose contract calls a group of ninja hounds led by Pakkun. The dogs can track targets by scent, communicate and restrain opponents. Kakashi’s own sense of smell is sharp enough to support pursuit even without them.
The Mangekyō Sharingan grants him Kamui, which distorts space and transfers targets to another dimension. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, his control improves enough to warp fast-moving objects, open passages and use Kamui repeatedly. Obito temporarily lends Kakashi both Mangekyō Sharingan and Six Paths chakra, allowing him to manifest a complete Susanoo and use Kamui-enhanced attacks.

- Chidori: The original form of Kakashi’s concentrated lightning technique, later taught to Sasuke.
- Lightning Release: Lightning Beast Tracking Fang: Shapes lightning into a hound that pursues and strikes a target.
- Lightning Transmission: Sends a cable of lightning between Kakashi and a shadow clone, cutting through targets caught between them.
- Purple Electricity: A versatile Lightning Release technique developed after Kakashi loses the Sharingan and can no longer use Lightning Cutter safely.
- Earth Release: Earth-Style Wall: Raises a defensive wall from the ground; Kakashi sometimes decorates it with carved dog heads.
- Earth Release: Headhunter Jutsu: Moves underground and pulls an opponent beneath the surface, leaving only the head exposed.
- Water Release: Water Dragon Bullet Technique: Forms a large serpentine dragon of water to strike a target.
- Water Release: Water Wall: Creates a defensive barrier of water around the user.
- Shadow Clone Technique: Produces a physical duplicate capable of acting independently.
- Multiple Shadow Clone Technique: Creates several solid clones, though Kakashi often uses the display as a bluff because of its chakra cost.
- Mist Servant Technique: Produces illusionary copies that continue reforming when attacked.
- One Thousand Years of Death: A surprise taijutsu attack used during Team 7’s bell test.
- Summoning Technique: Calls Kakashi’s eight ninja hounds for tracking, communication or restraint.
- Summoning: Earth Release: Tracking Fang Technique: Sends the ninja hounds underground to locate and immobilize a target by scent.
- Demonic Illusion: Hell Viewing Technique: Forces a target to experience an image of a personally disturbing event.
- Silent Killing: Detects and attacks opponents in obscured conditions without revealing his position.
- Kamui: Uses the Mangekyō Sharingan to transfer matter between the physical world and a separate dimension.
- Kamui Lightning Cutter: A Six Paths-enhanced Lightning Cutter that phases through counterattacks and warps away whatever it strikes.
- Kamui Shuriken: Projectiles formed by Kakashi’s complete Susanoo that send their targets into the Kamui dimension.
- Susanoo: A temporary complete-body chakra avatar accessed through Obito’s remaining power, equipped with wings and Kamui shuriken.
Relationships
Relationships
Sakumo Hatake shapes Kakashi’s earliest understanding of duty. The condemnation and death of Sakumo Hatake cause Kakashi to reject his father’s choice and follow regulations rigidly. As an adult, Kakashi recognizes that Sakumo Hatake’s decision to save his comrades was not shameful. During Kakashi’s near-death experience, he meets Sakumo again and tells him that he is proud to be his son.
Minato Namikaze is Kakashi’s teacher and commanding officer. Minato Namikaze recognizes Kakashi’s talent but remains concerned about his attitude after his father’s death. He later assigns Kakashi to protect Kushina Uzumaki during her pregnancy and recommends moving him from the Anbu into teaching.
Obito Uchiha begins as Kakashi’s teammate and ideological opposite. Kakashi dismisses Obito Uchiha’s lateness and emotional decisions, but eventually adopts his belief that abandoning comrades is worse than breaking rules. The Sharingan given by Obito Uchiha becomes Kakashi’s most recognizable ability. Their reunion as enemies forces Kakashi to confront both Obito’s crimes and his own guilt, culminating in a battle inside the Kamui dimension and Obito’s eventual return to their former ideals.
Rin Nohara serves as the medic of Team Minato and cares deeply for both boys. Kakashi promises Obito Uchiha that he will protect Rin Nohara. Rin’s death by Kakashi’s involuntary hand becomes his greatest trauma, though he later learns that she chose to intercept his attack to protect Konoha.
Naruto Uzumaki initially frustrates Kakashi with his impulsiveness, but Kakashi recognizes his determination and capacity to change others. Kakashi teaches Naruto Uzumaki elemental transformation through shadow clones and supports his development into a village leader. Their relationship progresses from teacher and difficult student to trusted comrades and successive Hokage.
Sasuke Uchiha shares Kakashi’s affinity for Lightning Release, possession of the Sharingan and experience of losing family. Kakashi gives Sasuke Uchiha specialized training and teaches him the Chidori. He also warns Sasuke Uchiha that revenge will not restore the people he lost. After Sasuke becomes a threat to Konoha, Kakashi accepts responsibility for confronting him but continues to hope that Team 7 can be restored.
Sakura Haruno develops from the least combat-ready member of Team 7 into a powerful medical ninja. Kakashi values Sakura Haruno’s intelligence and chakra control, and he relies on her judgment during later missions. He also recognizes the emotional burden that Sasuke’s departure places upon her.
Yamato knows Kakashi from the Anbu and temporarily leads Team 7 while Kakashi recovers. Kakashi trusts Yamato’s Wood Release to suppress the Nine-Tails’ chakra and frequently delegates practical work to him. Might Guy considers Kakashi his eternal rival, recording hundreds of competitions between them. Kakashi responds to Might Guy’s challenges with apparent indifference but regards him as a close and dependable friend.
Asuma Sarutobi and Kurenai Yuhi are Kakashi’s fellow jōnin instructors. Kakashi fights alongside Asuma Sarutobi against Akatsuki members and later supports Shikamaru Nara after Asuma’s death. He respects Kurenai Yuhi’s skill and works with her during the confrontation with Itachi and Kisame Hoshigaki.
Jiraiya is both an important village ally and the author of Kakashi’s favorite novels. Kakashi reads Jiraiya’s Make-Out series openly, including during training exercises. Tsunade repeatedly assigns Kakashi difficult missions and considers him a candidate to succeed her as Hokage.
Itachi Uchiha overwhelms Kakashi with Tsukuyomi during their first major confrontation, demonstrating the limitations of Kakashi’s borrowed Sharingan against an Uchiha master. Zabuza Momochi becomes Team 7’s first major enemy and tests Kakashi’s copied techniques and tactical skill. Kakashi ultimately respects the bond between Zabuza Momochi and Haku, despite fighting both as enemies.
Story Role
Story Role
Kakashi enters the main story as Team 7’s jōnin instructor. His bell test teaches Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura that the apparent objective matters less than their willingness to cooperate. He then leads them through early missions, including the Land of Waves assignment, where he fights Zabuza and exposes the team to the realities of shinobi violence.
During the Chūnin Exams, Kakashi suppresses Sasuke’s cursed seal and later trains him to use the Chidori. He confronts Orochimaru but recognizes the gap between their abilities. After Konoha’s invasion, Kakashi remains involved in village missions while monitoring the Akatsuki’s growing interest in Naruto.
In Part II, Kakashi helps rescue Gaara, develops Kamui and assists Naruto’s Wind Release training. He leads the pursuit of Akatsuki members Hidan and Kakuzu, coordinating closely with Shikamaru and Team 10. His experience allows him to identify Kakuzu’s multiple hearts and survive attacks from several elemental masks.
During Pain’s invasion, Kakashi defends Konoha and analyzes the Deva Path’s ability. He exhausts his remaining chakra using Kamui to protect Choji Akimichi and dies, later returning when Nagato restores the people killed in the attack. The experience gives him a final conversation with his father and resolves the shame surrounding Sakumo’s death.
Kakashi commands the Third Division of the Allied Shinobi Forces during the Fourth Shinobi World War. He battles reincarnated swordsmen, encounters Zabuza and Haku again and helps Naruto confront the masked enemy. The revelation that the masked man is Obito makes their conflict deeply personal, eventually leading to a direct duel inside the Kamui dimension.
In the war’s final stages, Kakashi reunites with the original Team 7 against Kaguya Otsutsuki. Obito’s chakra temporarily grants him both Mangekyō Sharingan, allowing him to manifest a complete Susanoo and help seal Kaguya. After the war, Kakashi becomes the Sixth Hokage and oversees Konoha’s reconstruction before passing the office to Naruto.
Character Development
Character Development
Kakashi’s childhood belief that rules outweigh comrades is a defensive response to his father’s fate. Obito’s example forces him to reconsider that belief, but the lesson arrives alongside another traumatic loss. Kakashi subsequently builds his adult code around protecting teammates, even while privately blaming himself for those he could not save.
His time in the Anbu rewards emotional distance and efficiency, deepening habits formed during the war. Becoming a teacher changes the direction of his life. By refusing to pass genin who lack teamwork, Kakashi converts his losses into a standard intended to keep new shinobi alive.
Team 7 challenges his emotional reserve. Naruto requires patience rather than simple discipline; Sasuke confronts him with a familiar obsession; Sakura develops through a path Kakashi cannot personally teach. Their separation makes Kakashi question his effectiveness, yet he continues to claim responsibility for all three.
The confrontation with Obito forces Kakashi to distinguish responsibility from endless self-punishment. He acknowledges that he failed to keep his promise concerning Rin, but he rejects Obito’s attempt to replace reality with illusion. Their battle gives Kakashi an opportunity to defend the principles they once shared.
As Hokage, Kakashi moves from field command to civil leadership. He helps modernize Konoha, manages the aftermath of war and creates the stability inherited by Naruto. His later life is less burdened by the need to memorialize the dead through suffering, allowing him to maintain their ideals through mentorship and public service.
Etymology
Etymology
“Kakashi” means “scarecrow” in Japanese, while “hatake” means “field” or “farmland.” Read together, the name evokes a scarecrow standing in a field. Scarecrow imagery appears around the character in illustrations and training scenes, including a dummy used by Naruto.
Creator Masashi Kishimoto considered several agriculture-related names before selecting Kakashi, including words meaning hoe, sickle and peony. The final choice retained the rural naming motif while giving the character a simple, memorable name.
The scarecrow association also informs Kakashi’s visual silhouette. His tall frame, spiky hair, covered face and loosely held posture resemble a solitary figure stationed in a field. Kishimoto used similar visual puns elsewhere in the series but made Kakashi’s name one of the most direct.
“Kakashi of the Sharingan” identifies him by an eye inherited from another clan, while “Copy Ninja Kakashi” refers to his use of that eye to reproduce techniques. Both epithets precede him internationally and often cause enemies to recognize him before a battle begins.

Anime-original episodes expand Kakashi’s youth, Anbu service and work with Team 7. The Kakashi: Shadow of the Anbu Black Ops arc depicts missions involving Yamato, Itachi and the political tensions surrounding the Uchiha. Although created for television, it builds upon events and relationships established by the manga.
Kakashi plays substantial roles in several films. Naruto the Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow connects him to Koyuki Kazahana through an earlier mission. Naruto Shippuden the Movie: The Will of Fire places him at the center of a plot involving stolen bloodline abilities and his willingness to sacrifice himself for Konoha.
The Last: Naruto the Movie portrays Kakashi as the Sixth Hokage during a crisis involving the moon. Boruto: Naruto the Movie and Boruto: Naruto Next Generations show him after leaving office, occasionally testing or advising the next generation.
The light novel Kakashi Hiden: Lightning in the Icy Sky follows him during the period before he formally accepts the Hokage position. Later novels and anime stories portray his administration, friendship with Guy and travels after retirement.
Kakashi is playable in most major franchise games, including the Clash of Ninja, Ultimate Ninja and Ultimate Ninja Storm series. Separate versions represent his youth, Anbu period, standard jōnin appearance, Mangekyō abilities, dual-Sharingan transformation and tenure as Hokage.
Reception
Reception
Kakashi consistently placed near the top of the official Japanese character popularity polls conducted during the manga’s serialization. He ranked first in multiple polls and remained within the top three across the original series’ principal votes, an unusual level of consistency for a character other than the protagonist.
In the worldwide NARUTOP99 poll, Kakashi finished fifth overall. He placed first among Japanese voters and was the leading character among voters in their forties, reflecting popularity across both the franchise’s home audience and older readers.
Critical commentary frequently highlights his combination of comic understatement, tactical competence and personal loss. The bell test, battles with Zabuza, confrontation with Obito and final reunion of Team 7 are among the episodes most closely associated with his role.
Kakashi’s tilted forehead protector, face mask, silver hair and visible Sharingan became some of the franchise’s most recognizable design elements. The long-running question of his concealed face generated official comedy chapters, promotional material and widespread fan discussion before the reveal.
The character appears extensively in figures, clothing, trading cards, games and crossover merchandise. His hand signs, Lightning Cutter and habit of reading during conversations are frequently reproduced in promotional art and cosplay, while “those who abandon their friends are worse than scum” remains one of the series’ most cited principles.
