Inside this volume
Kakashi Hatake believes that Zabuza Momochi survived their previous battle and will soon return to complete his mission. Anticipating a second attack, Kakashi places Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno through an exacting chakra-control exercise designed to improve their concentration, endurance, and command of their abilities.
As Team 7 prepares for the renewed threat, Naruto learns how the people of the Land of Waves lost hope under Gatō’s rule. The bridge they have been assigned to protect represents more than a construction project: its completion could restore the isolated nation’s independence. When Zabuza and the masked Haku return, the young ninja face a battle far beyond the difficulty of their stated mission.
Knowing that Zabuza remains alive, Kakashi begins preparing Team 7 for another confrontation by teaching its members to climb trees without using their hands. The exercise requires them to focus chakra precisely through their feet. Sasuke and Naruto struggle at first, but their rivalry drives them to improve rapidly. While recovering from training, Naruto meets Haku in the forest without recognizing the masked ninja and hears that strength can arise from protecting someone precious.
At Tazuna’s home, Naruto also encounters the bridge builder’s grandson, Inari, whose faith in heroism was destroyed after Gatō publicly murdered his adoptive father, Kaiza. Naruto condemns Inari’s resignation but privately recognizes the pain behind it. The account strengthens his determination to defend the bridge and restore the villagers’ courage.
Zabuza and Haku eventually attack Tazuna’s worksite. Kakashi resumes his duel with Zabuza, while Sasuke confronts Haku and begins adapting to the masked ninja’s extraordinary speed. After Haku surrounds Sasuke with Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystals, Naruto arrives but becomes trapped inside the technique as well. When Sasuke shields him from a potentially fatal assault and collapses, Naruto’s grief and fury awaken the Nine-Tailed Fox’s chakra.
