Akane Osaki causes a stir when her secret lessons with her father’s former teacher, Shiguma Arakawa, become known. She begins exchanging informal instruction for formal training, taking her first steps from opening-act zenza toward headliner shin’uchi while finishing high school and learning to work with Shiguma’s established apprentices.
Six years after rakugo master Issho Arakawa expelled every candidate from a shin’uchi promotion examination, Akane remains determined to vindicate her father, Shinta Arakawa. Shiguma, who has secretly taught her since the expulsion, tests her resolve with a public performance before accepting her as a formal pupil.
Akane’s technical ability impresses her new senior apprentices, but Kyoji Arakawa identifies a serious weakness: she performs according to her own preferences instead of responding to her audience. Through work at an izakaya, Akane begins learning kibataraki—the awareness and anticipation necessary to entertain the people before her.
