Akane opens Asagao’s promotion event knowing that Taizen’s recommendation could allow her to pursue futatsume status. Her performance demonstrates how thoroughly she has absorbed Chocho Konjakutei’s lessons without simply copying his style. Taizen must then decide whether his judgment of Akane outweighs Zensho’s threat and the political divisions surrounding Shiguma’s school.

Attention subsequently shifts to Maikeru, who announces his intention to attempt the shin’uchi examination. No Shiguma disciple has faced that test since the mass expulsion involving Shinta Arakawa. Maikeru’s candidacy forces the school to revisit its history and prepares the Arch Four for another consequential judgment.
