Maikeru approaches the shin’uchi examination under the shadow of Shinta’s expulsion and the damage it inflicted on Shiguma Arakawa’s disciples. His relaxed exterior conceals the importance he places on honoring his former senior apprentice and proving that the Shiguma branch deserves recognition. The examination also exposes the rivalry between Maikeru and Zensho, performers whose similar outward styles rest on sharply different principles.

Rather than imitate the qualities expected of an elite rakugoka, Maikeru builds his performance around his own temperament.
