Shinta Arakawa

Shinta is warm, absent-minded and deeply considerate. His kindness is visible both in his family life and in the way he assists younger members of Shiguma's school. Although he can become anxious before a major performance, thoughts of his wife and daughter help him recover his composure.

His expulsion leaves him discouraged and unable to speak freely about rakugo for years. Even so, he does not resent Akane for following the same path. He supports her choice and places her development ahead of his own unresolved disappointment.

Shinta's rakugo centers on ninjōbanashi, stories concerned with human emotion and relationships. During his promotion examination, he models characters after his wife and daughter, differentiating them through changes in voice, expression and gesture.

His principal strength is sincerity. Rather than dazzling an audience with overt showmanship, he draws upon familiar emotions and domestic observations to make fictional people feel authentic. His performance at the examination demonstrates the ability expected of a serious shin'uchi candidate, even though he is not promoted.

Shinta's shin'uchi examination opens the series. After years of apprenticeship, he delivers a performance inspired by his family, only for Issho to expel every candidate from the Arakawa School. Barred from using his professional name, he abandons rakugo and begins another career.

Akane witnesses both his performance and its aftermath. Her determination to understand the judgment against him—and eventually prove the worth of the art he taught her—becomes the central drive of the story.

Shinta later returns to performances and conversations that illuminate Shiguma's school before the expulsion. These appearances show that he was not only Akane's inspiration but also a valued senior whose storytelling influenced colleagues such as Koguma.

Akane Osaki is Shinta's daughter and greatest admirer. He teaches her through example and supports her decision to enter professional rakugo. Masaki Osaki is his wife, whose encouragement sustained him during his performing career and after its abrupt end.

Shiguma Arakawa is Shinta's former master, and Shinta entrusts Akane's education to him. Maikeru Arakawa is a close friend from Shiguma's school. Koguma Arakawa was once his junior, and their shared interest in old stories helped inspire Koguma's scholarly approach.

Issho Arakawa is the judge who expelled Shinta and the other candidates, making him the central institutional figure behind Shinta's departure from rakugo.
