Koguma Arakawa

Koguma is shy, introspective and prone to pessimism. He habitually considers every possibility before acting, which can leave him indecisive and visibly anxious when responsibility is placed upon him. His reluctance to mentor Akane initially stems from a fear that inadequate guidance might discourage her from rakugo.

His reserve disappears onstage. Once confident in his understanding of a story, he speaks with authority and communicates its setting with striking clarity. This contrast reflects the discipline behind his preparation: uncertainty drives him to study until he can perform without hesitation.

Koguma specializes in terakoya, an educational approach built upon close study of classical literature and historical context. Rather than relying heavily on theatrical dialogue, he narrates events with enough detail and realism to make an unfamiliar period accessible to a modern audience.

His research skills are exceptional. Before interpreting a story, he investigates its language, customs and social background, then selects details that deepen the audience's understanding without overwhelming the performance. His instruction helps Akane recognize that mastering a rakugo story requires more than memorizing its script.

Koguma enters the story as one of Shiguma's senior pupils. When Akane prepares to compete in the Karaku Cup, she seeks his help with “Jugemu.” His lessons introduce her to the intellectual side of rakugo and teach her how knowledge of a story's world can strengthen its delivery.

His own background explains that approach. Frequent childhood moves made him reluctant to form attachments, so books became a refuge. He later attended the University of Tokyo, graduated at the top of his class and discovered rakugo through its student club. His academic habits subsequently became the foundation of his professional style.

Following the reorganization of Shiguma's pupils, Koguma becomes attached to Ikken Arakawa's school, continuing his career under another shin'uchi while preserving the teaching he received from Shiguma.

Shiguma Arakawa is Koguma's original master and the teacher he deeply respects. Ikken Arakawa later accepts him as a pupil after Shiguma's school is reorganized.

Akane Osaki begins as his junior and student. Koguma eventually regards her as a younger sister and works to become a senior she can respect. Guriko Arakawa likewise occupies a younger-brother role in his life, while Kyoji Arakawa is a trusted colleague.

Maikeru Arakawa is one of Koguma's closest friends, though Koguma has admitted envying Maikeru's freedom and natural popularity. Shinta Arakawa helped mentor him when he was the youngest Shiguma pupil and encouraged the rigorous study that transformed his stage presence. Hakushu Kashiwaya is a professional friend with whom he performs and converses.
