Inside this volume
The mission to rescue Gaara has ended, but the information left behind by Sasori gives Konoha its first promising lead toward Sasuke Uchiha. With Kakashi Hatake temporarily bedridden, Naruto Uzumaki and Sakura Haruno must accept two unfamiliar shinobi into their ranks before meeting Sasori’s spy.
The re-formed Team Kakashi is divided from the beginning. Naruto immediately clashes with the emotionless and provocative Sai, while their temporary captain, Yamato, struggles to establish cooperation through a mixture of authority and intimidation. Beneath the tension lies a larger political conflict within Konoha, as Sai’s connection to Danzō Shimura and the covert Foundation places the mission under hidden scrutiny.
After returning to Konoha, Kakashi explains that Sasori had arranged to meet a spy operating within Orochimaru’s organization. Because Kakashi is weakened by his use of the Mangekyō Sharingan, Tsunade assigns Yamato to lead the mission in his place. Danzō pressures the village leadership into adding Sai, a shinobi from the covert Foundation, as the fourth member of the team.
Naruto and Sakura quickly distrust Sai. His emotionless behavior, insulting remarks, and willingness to provoke others make cooperation difficult. Yamato attempts to force the three younger ninja to behave as a functioning squad, but Sai continues secretly reporting to Danzō and carries orders whose full purpose remains concealed.
During the journey, Sai reveals that he has difficulty understanding emotions and interpersonal bonds. His unfinished picture book suggests that he once shared a close relationship with another Foundation trainee, although he claims not to remember the feelings involved. Naruto remains openly hostile toward him, particularly after Sai insults Sasuke and questions Naruto’s determination to recover him.
The team reaches the Tenchi Bridge, where Yamato disguises himself as Sasori and approaches the spy. The informant is revealed to be Kabuto Yakushi, who begins providing information about Orochimaru’s movements. Before the exchange can be completed, Orochimaru appears and exposes the meeting as a trap.
