Sai

Sai initially appears calm, detached, and socially tone-deaf. Root training taught him that emotion could interfere with missions, leaving him poorly equipped to understand ordinary friendship, humor, anger, or affection.

He attempts to solve the problem intellectually. Sai reads books about relationships and deliberately tests techniques such as smiling or giving nicknames, often producing the opposite effect because he does not understand the emotional context behind them.

His smiles are initially artificial, and he can make surprisingly harsh observations without realizing why they hurt people. Naruto and Sakura therefore respond to him with immediate distrust, especially because he occupies the place previously held by Sasuke.

Over time, Sai becomes genuinely interested in the bond connecting the former Team 7 members. Their refusal to abandon Sasuke gradually restores memories of his own suppressed attachment to someone he once considered a brother.

Sai specializes in Super Beast Scroll, using a brush and ink to create drawings that become mobile chakra constructs. Birds provide aerial transport and reconnaissance, while lions and other animals can attack or restrain targets.

His smaller ink creatures are useful for spying and communication. Because the constructs can travel independently, Sai is particularly effective during covert missions.

He can also use Ink Clone Technique, creating duplicates from ink rather than conventional chakra-only shadow clones.

Sai is a skilled swordsman and carries a short sword for close-range combat. Root conditioning also gives him strong stealth, assassination, and infiltration fundamentals.

His artistic skill predates or parallels his emotional suppression. He has produced enormous numbers of drawings yet initially struggles to title personal works because titles require subjective emotional meaning.

Later, Sai becomes increasingly proficient with sealing techniques derived from ink-based ninjutsu, allowing him to restrain or contain dangerous targets.

Sai is assigned to Team Kakashi after the time skip, joining Naruto and Sakura under temporary captain Yamato during a mission connected to Orochimaru.

His presence is immediately controversial because he occupies Sasuke's former position and repeatedly insults the missing teammate Naruto and Sakura are determined to recover.

Sai is secretly operating under separate instructions from Danzō, creating uncertainty about whether his loyalty lies with the official mission or Root.

As he watches Naruto and Sakura risk themselves for Sasuke, Sai begins comparing their bond with the relationship he once had with his Root brother.

Sai eventually abandons the secret direction that would conflict with Team 7 and chooses to help Naruto pursue Sasuke, marking his first major rejection of Root's emotional conditioning.

He remains part of Konoha's active shinobi force and later participates in missions surrounding Akatsuki and the Fourth Shinobi World War.

During the war, Sai's aerial ink creatures make him useful for reconnaissance and transportation, while his sealing abilities become important against reincarnated enemies.

His confrontation with the reincarnated Shin forces Sai to acknowledge openly the bond Root had ordered him to suppress, giving emotional closure to the unfinished picture book the two had created as children.

Naruto Uzumaki initially dislikes Sai because of his insults toward Sasuke. Sai gradually comes to respect Naruto Uzumaki's determination and learns much of what friendship means by observing him.

Sakura Haruno reacts even more aggressively to Sai's early lack of tact. Over time, Sakura Haruno accepts him as a real member of the team rather than a replacement for Sasuke.

Sasuke Uchiha is the absent teammate whose place Sai initially occupies. Sai's attempts to understand why Sasuke Uchiha matters so much to Naruto and Sakura become central to his own emotional growth.

Shin is Sai's closest companion from Root training and the person he regarded as an older brother. [Root's final training intended Sai and Shin to fight to the death, but Shin's illness prevented the ritual from occurring as planned.](#spoiler)

Danzō Shimura is the leader who shapes Sai's childhood. Danzō Shimura trains Root members to erase personal identity and emotion in favor of absolute mission loyalty.

Yamato leads the reconstituted Team 7 when Sai joins. Yamato's suspicion of Root means he monitors Sai carefully while still giving him the opportunity to become part of the team.

Ino Yamanaka later develops a close relationship with Sai. Their relationship eventually becomes romantic, and they marry after the events of the original series.
