Kabuto Yakushi

Kabuto is intelligent, adaptable, observant, and extremely skilled at presenting whatever personality best serves his current assignment. When introduced, he behaves like an approachable senior genin who willingly gives younger contestants information about the Chūnin Exams.

His espionage career makes deception habitual rather than situational. Kabuto has served multiple organizations under different identities, gathering intelligence while revealing little about himself.

Beneath that adaptability is a deep identity problem. Being repeatedly assigned names, roles, allegiances, and targets leaves Kabuto uncertain about what remains when those external definitions are removed.

His attachment to Orochimaru partly answers that uncertainty. Orochimaru recognizes Kabuto's usefulness without demanding that he pretend to be morally ordinary, giving him a place where his medical curiosity and capacity for deception are assets.

Kabuto is an exceptional medical-nin. His anatomical knowledge allows him to diagnose injuries, perform complex procedures, regenerate damaged tissue, and weaponize chakra with surgical precision.

His Chakra Scalpel coats his hands in sharp chakra capable of severing muscles and internal tissue without necessarily breaking the skin. In close combat this allows Kabuto to disable an opponent's movement with precise strikes.

He can use Mystical Palm Technique for advanced healing and demonstrates remarkable recovery capabilities even after sustaining serious injuries.

Kabuto is also an expert spy and intelligence analyst. His chakra cards during the Chūnin Exams contain detailed information on numerous competitors, illustrating how extensively he studies potential opponents.

After Orochimaru's defeat, Kabuto implants Orochimaru's remains into his own body and gradually modifies himself using genetic material and abilities obtained from several of Orochimaru's former subjects.

These modifications eventually allow him to enter Sage Mode after training at Ryūchi Cave. His transformed body incorporates abilities associated with the Sound Five and Orochimaru while gaining enhanced sensory perception, regeneration, and senjutsu.

Kabuto also masters Impure World Reincarnation to an extraordinary degree, resurrecting numerous powerful dead shinobi and becoming one of the central military threats of the Fourth Shinobi World War.

Kabuto enters the Chūnin Exams pretending to be another Konoha participant. He approaches Naruto's group before the written test and uses information cards to explain the abilities and backgrounds of notable contestants.

His apparent friendliness conceals his role as Orochimaru's operative. Kabuto gathers intelligence within Konoha while assisting his master's broader plans.

During the invasion of Konoha, Kabuto uses genjutsu to incapacitate spectators and continues operating behind enemy lines. His medical skill and combat ability establish that his apparent genin status severely understates his capabilities.

He later fights Tsunade and Naruto during the search for the Fifth Hokage. Tsunade disrupts his nervous system, but Kabuto demonstrates remarkable medical knowledge by learning to compensate for the scrambled signals during battle.

In Part II, Kabuto continues serving Orochimaru until the balance between master and subordinate changes dramatically.

After Sasuke defeats Orochimaru, Kabuto incorporates part of Orochimaru into himself, beginning an extensive physical transformation while searching for an identity that belongs to him rather than one assigned by others.

Kabuto later allies himself with Tobi and uses Edo Tensei to provide an enormous army of resurrected shinobi for the Fourth Shinobi World War. His control of the technique makes him indispensable to the enemy war effort.

Itachi and Sasuke eventually confront Kabuto together. Itachi traps him within Izanami, a technique designed to force him to stop escaping into borrowed identities and acknowledge himself. Kabuto subsequently releases Edo Tensei.

Orochimaru is Kabuto's master, employer, research partner, and greatest influence. Kabuto serves Orochimaru for years and eventually becomes so invested in him that he incorporates Orochimaru's cells into his own body after Sasuke defeats him.

Nono Yakushi is the medical-nin who finds the injured Kabuto as a child and becomes his adoptive mother. [Danzō's manipulation eventually causes Nono Yakushi and Kabuto to be sent against one another without properly recognizing each other, and Kabuto accidentally kills her.](#spoiler)

Danzō Shimura recruits Kabuto into Root's intelligence network. Danzō Shimura's exploitation of Kabuto and Nono plays a major role in destroying Kabuto's stable sense of identity.

Sasuke Uchiha initially encounters Kabuto through their mutual connection to Orochimaru. [Sasuke Uchiha later joins Itachi in fighting Kabuto during the Fourth Shinobi World War.](#spoiler)

Naruto Uzumaki fights Kabuto during the search for Tsunade and lands the Rasengan on him despite Kabuto's attempts to neutralize the technique.

Tsunade is one of the few medical-nin whose knowledge clearly exceeds Kabuto's during their early confrontation. Kabuto acknowledges Tsunade's extraordinary medical ability while attempting to compensate through analysis and preparation.
