Yamato

Yamato is disciplined, observant, and generally more concerned with mission procedure than the younger members of Team Kakashi. He quickly recognizes the interpersonal tension between Naruto, Sakura Haruno, and Sai and repeatedly reminds them that successful teams require cooperation.

He is not humorless. Yamato sometimes uses exaggeratedly frightening expressions to discipline Naruto and can be surprisingly petty about expenses, particularly when Kakashi manipulates him into paying for meals.

His ANBU background gives him a cautious approach to unfamiliar allies. Sai's connection to Danzō Shimura therefore makes Yamato particularly alert to the possibility of hidden orders.

Yamato nevertheless becomes genuinely invested in Naruto's growth. He helps him train safely, intervenes when the Nine-Tails' chakra becomes dangerous, and encourages Naruto to recognize that his own strength matters independently of the tailed beast.

Yamato's defining ability is Wood Release, the kekkei genkai famously associated with the First Hokage, Hashirama Senju. He creates and manipulates wood by combining Earth and Water Release chakra.

Wood Release gives him exceptional versatility. Yamato can produce walls, cages, pillars, bridges, defensive structures, and restraints directly from the terrain.

His Wood Release: Four-Pillar House Technique can construct an entire wooden building rapidly, a practical application he uses during missions.

Most importantly, Yamato's Wood Release can suppress tailed-beast chakra. Combined with the First Hokage's necklace, this makes him particularly valuable while Naruto is struggling to control the Nine-Tails.

He is also proficient in conventional Earth and Water Release and has the stealth, tracking, infiltration, and combat experience expected of a veteran ANBU operative.

Yamato enters Part II when Tsunade assigns him to replace the recovering Kakashi as captain of Team Kakashi. His first mission with Naruto, Sakura, and Sai is to investigate a potential contact connected to Sasori and Orochimaru.

His Wood Release becomes crucial when Naruto loses control during the confrontation with Orochimaru. Yamato suppresses the Nine-Tails' chakra and subsequently warns Naruto about the damage his transformed state caused Sakura.

Yamato later supervises Naruto's training to develop a new wind-nature technique. His ability to restrain the Nine-Tails makes it possible for Naruto to accelerate training through large numbers of shadow clones with reduced risk.

He continues supporting Team Kakashi in operations involving Sasuke and Akatsuki and becomes an important source of stability during Kakashi's absences.

Yamato is eventually captured by Kabuto and used to strengthen the White Zetsu army because his body contains Hashirama's cells. His Wood Release substantially enhances the enemy's mass-produced forces.

During the war he is incorporated into the artificial construct known as Tobi/Guruguru and forced to use enhanced Wood Release against the Allied Shinobi Forces before eventually being freed.

Kakashi Hatake is Yamato's senior from their ANBU years and the captain whose team Yamato temporarily inherits. Yamato respects Kakashi Hatake, although Kakashi happily exploits that respect when convenient.

Naruto Uzumaki becomes Yamato's most important responsibility on Team Kakashi. Yamato's ability to suppress the Nine-Tails makes him uniquely equipped to supervise Naruto Uzumaki's dangerous training.

Sakura Haruno serves under Yamato during his period as temporary captain. Yamato recognizes Sakura Haruno's concern for Naruto and relies on her medical and combat abilities.

Sai initially draws Yamato's suspicion because of his Root affiliation and secret orders from Danzō Shimura.

Tsunade assigns Yamato his codename and places him in command of Team Kakashi because his Wood Release offers a safeguard against Naruto's tailed-beast chakra.

Orochimaru is connected directly to Yamato's unusual abilities. Yamato was one of the children experimented upon with Hashirama's genetic material, and the only known child among those test subjects to survive and develop Wood Release.
