Synopsis
Short of money, Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates enter the Dead End Race, a clandestine competition in which pirate crews navigate a dangerous and unpredictable course for a substantial prize. The event brings them into contact with bounty hunter Shuraiya Bascùd and former Marine Gasparde, a ruthless pirate captain whose involvement suggests that the race is not what it appears to be.
The film is a self-contained, non-canonical adventure featuring the post-Alabasta crew, including Tony Tony Chopper and Nico Robin. Its setting and roster place it broadly between the Alabasta and Jaya portions of the television series. It is notable for adopting the scale and runtime of a full theatrical feature, combining a pirate race with a revenge drama and a conspiracy surrounding the competition.
Highlights
- Toei Animation produced the film under director Kōnosuke Uda, the original series director of the television anime.
- Yoshiyuki Suga wrote the screenplay, beginning a run that included several consecutive One Piece movies.
- The film opened in Japan on March 1, 2003, and grossed approximately ¥2 billion domestically.
- Its approximately 95-minute runtime made it the first full-length One Piece theatrical feature.

- Actor and singer Miki Sakai guest-starred as Adelle Bascùd, while veteran actor Tarō Ishida voiced Gasparde.
