Personality
Personality
Guy is exuberant, competitive, sincere, and intensely optimistic. He structures much of his life around personal rules in which failure automatically produces a more demanding challenge. The point is to turn setbacks into useful training rather than allow them to become excuses.
He speaks constantly about youth, passion, and perseverance, often creating scenes that embarrass more reserved companions. His enthusiasm is not superficial. Guy follows his own training rules even when no one is watching, demonstrating that his philosophy is self-discipline rather than performance.
His relationship with Lee reveals his strongest qualities as a teacher. Guy understands the pain of working beside more naturally gifted people and refuses to let Lee define himself entirely through what he cannot do. His advice that hard work is useless unless Lee believes in himself becomes one of the foundations of Lee's development.
Guy's friendliness toward rivals is similarly genuine. He treats Kakashi as his eternal rival, challenges him constantly, and keeps an elaborate win-loss record across contests ranging from combat to trivial games.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Guy is one of the world's strongest taijutsu users. His physical speed, striking power, endurance, reflexes, and conditioning allow him to fight opponents who normally require powerful ninjutsu to confront.
He is an advanced user of the Eight Gates, capable of opening all eight. Each gate removes part of the body's natural restriction on physical output, increasing strength and speed while progressively damaging the user.
His Morning Peacock is performed after opening the Sixth Gate, delivering punches so rapidly that friction creates the appearance of flaming impacts.
The Daytime Tiger, used through the Seventh Gate, is not a ninjutsu technique but a massive air-pressure attack generated by an extraordinarily powerful punch.
Guy also uses nunchaku and is skilled enough in weapons to fight dangerous opponents without relying entirely upon the Gates.
Opening the Eighth Gate of Death grants Guy power great enough to challenge Ten-Tails Madara directly. His ultimate attack, Night Guy, distorts space through the force and speed of the kick but inflicts catastrophic damage on his own body.
Story Role
Story Role
Guy is introduced as the eccentric jōnin supervising Team Guy during the Chūnin Exam period. His first significant interaction occurs when he interrupts Lee's unauthorized fight with Sasuke and immediately demonstrates the intense teacher-student bond between them.
During Lee's match against Gaara, Guy explains the Eight Gates and the severe risks involved. When Gaara attempts to continue attacking Lee after the match is effectively over, Guy intervenes personally.
After Lee's injuries threaten to end his career, Guy promises to die alongside him if the surgery fails, restoring Lee's determination to risk the procedure rather than surrender his dream. The official Naruto site highlights Guy's role in giving Lee the courage to continue.
In Part II, Team Guy joins the mission to rescue Gaara from Akatsuki. Guy later becomes one of the few shinobi capable of fighting Kisame Hoshigaki repeatedly without relying on ninjutsu that Samehada can absorb.
During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Guy fights alongside Kakashi and Naruto against increasingly powerful enemies. His mastery of the Gates eventually makes him central to the battle against Madara.
When conventional attacks fail against Madara's Ten-Tails jinchūriki form, Guy opens the Eighth Gate despite knowing the technique should kill him. His performance is so extraordinary that Madara explicitly acknowledges him as the strongest taijutsu user he has encountered.
Relationships
Relationships
Rock Lee is Guy's most devoted student and the person who most completely adopts his training philosophy. Guy sees his own struggles reflected in Rock Lee and becomes personally invested in proving that Lee can become an excellent shinobi without conventional ninjutsu.
Neji Hyuuga is another member of Guy's team. Guy respects Neji Hyuuga's natural ability while attempting to turn Team Guy into a unit in which genius and hard work complement rather than invalidate each other.
Tenten completes Team Guy and frequently serves as the most grounded counterweight to her teacher's extreme enthusiasm. Guy relies upon Tenten's weapon expertise and consistency.
Kakashi Hatake is Guy's self-declared eternal rival. Guy has challenged Kakashi Hatake dozens of times across wildly different contests, and beneath the comedy the two possess deep mutual trust.
Might Duy is Guy's father and the source of his philosophy about perseverance. Might Duy, despite spending much of his career as a genin, teaches Guy the Eight Gates and demonstrates that self-sacrifice and conviction cannot be measured through rank alone.
Kisame Hoshigaki becomes one of Guy's recurring enemies. Guy's taijutsu is particularly effective against Kisame Hoshigaki because his strongest attacks do not depend upon conventional chakra projectiles.
